There is no authoritative, complete list of people banned from Saturday Night Live. The best-supported case is Sinéad O’Connor, whom The Washington Post reported NBC banned after her 1992 performance—but that account sits uneasily beside creator Lorne Michaels’s later statement that the show has never banned a musical guest. Other names often attached to “banned” lists involve a famous on-air incident, a protest withdrawal or an unverified claim, not a confirmed lifetime ban.

What “banned from SNL” can mean

The phrase is used loosely. It may describe an official network restriction, a producer’s alleged decision not to book someone again, a performer’s own choice to withdraw, or simply a long gap between appearances. Those are different claims, and the public evidence does not establish an exhaustive roster of people barred from the show.

In the documentary Ladies & Gentlemen… 50 Years of SNL Music, which premiered in January 2025, creator and producer Lorne Michaels addressed musical guests specifically: “We’ve never banned anyone. We’re way too crass and opportunistic. If something’s hot, we’re going to go for it and have it on.” Billboard’s report presents this as Michaels’s statement about musical performers; it should not be expanded into proof that no host, cast member or other guest has ever been excluded.

Sinéad O’Connor: a reported NBC ban after the 1992 performance

On October 3, 1992, O’Connor performed Bob Marley’s “War” a cappella, adapting its lyrics to protest child abuse in the Catholic Church. At the end, she tore up a photograph of Pope John Paul II and said, “Fight the real enemy.” The Washington Post reports that rehearsals had used an image of a refugee child and that NBC received 496 calls reprimanding O’Connor’s action. The newspaper also reports that NBC banned her afterward. The Post’s account is the clearest support for describing this as a ban, but the available accounts do not resolve its formal status or duration.

That report conflicts with Michaels’s 2025 general statement that musical guests had never been banned. The conflict should remain visible: the Post describes an NBC ban on O’Connor, while Michaels made a broad statement about musical guests. The available evidence does not establish how the two accounts might be reconciled.

O’Connor later rejected the idea that the incident ended her career. As quoted in the Post from her biography, she said: “A lot of people say or think that tearing up the Pope’s photo derailed my career. That’s not how I feel about it. … It wasn’t derailed. It was re-railed.”

Elvis Costello: the 1977 switch did not become a permanent ban

During his December 17, 1977 appearance with the Attractions, Costello abandoned the planned “Less Than Zero” and began “Radio Radio,” a song critical of commercial radio. The interruption became a defining SNL story, but it did not keep him away permanently: Billboard reports that he returned in 1989, 1991 and 1999, including a parody of the original incident with the Beastie Boys. Those later appearances rule out the familiar claim that he was banned for life.

Andrew Dice Clay’s 1990 episode: a protest withdrawal, not a ban

Before Andrew Dice Clay hosted in May 1990, cast member Nora Dunn and scheduled musical guest O’Connor withdrew in protest. O’Connor said she felt it showed disrespect to women to expect her to perform on the same show as Clay. The Los Angeles Times reported her statement and Michaels’s response that the show had asked her to sing two songs, not endorse Clay. Time reported that Julee Cruise and the Spanic Boys replaced her. This was a protest withdrawal by Dunn and O’Connor, not evidence that either was banned after appearing.

Rage Against the Machine and other disputed names

Rage Against the Machine is frequently named in online lists because its 1996 appearance was controversial and associated with protest imagery. The available accounts establish that the episode is part of SNL’s ban lore, but do not verify a specific official decision to ban the group. Michaels’s later remarks about musical guests do not establish what happened backstage in this particular case. Treat the ban claim as unverified rather than fact. Coverage of the controversies provides context, not proof of an official restriction.

Similar caution applies to lists that include Fear, Milton Berle, Adrien Brody, David Bowie or others. An appearance dispute, rumor or absence from later episodes does not by itself establish that NBC or SNL production imposed a ban. The evidence available here does not substantiate every name on such lists.

What the evidence supports

Person or case What is established What “banned” means here
Sinéad O’Connor, 1992 The Washington Post reports that NBC banned her after the Pope-photo protest. A reported NBC ban; its formal status and duration are not established here, and Michaels later said musical guests had never been banned.
Elvis Costello, 1977 He switched songs during the broadcast and later returned in 1989, 1991 and 1999, according to Billboard. Not a permanent ban.
Nora Dunn and Sinéad O’Connor, 1990 They withdrew from the Andrew Dice Clay episode in protest; replacements performed. A protest withdrawal, not a ban imposed on them.
Rage Against the Machine and other frequently listed names Controversies or claims circulate, but the sources cited here do not establish an official ban. Unverified unless supported by stronger first-hand or official evidence.
