Netflix cancelled The Recruit after two seasons on March 5, 2025, so there will be no Season 3 unless the series is revived elsewhere. Its six-episode second season premiered January 30, 2025. The finale now serves as the series finale, but it leaves CIA lawyer Owen Hendricks and NIS agent Jang Kyun facing an unresolved choice.
Is The Recruit coming back for Season 3?
No Season 3 has been announced. TheWrap reported the cancellation on March 5, 2025, about a month after Season 2 began streaming. Cast member Colton Dunn announced the news, and creator Alexi Hawley confirmed it later that day, according to TVLine. Hawley said he and the team would be ready to continue the story as “two seasons and a movie,” but that was an expression of interest, not an announced Netflix plan.

The second season’s six episodes arrived on January 30, 2025, according to Netflix Tudum. Season 1 had eight episodes and premiered December 16, 2022; together, the series’ two seasons contain 14 episodes.
What happens at the end of Season 2?
Spoilers for the Season 2 finale below.
Season 2 draws Owen into a South Korean intelligence crisis after NIS agent Jang Kyun’s wife, Nan Hee, is abducted in Russia. The plot involves graymail, a trackable cryptocurrency operation tied to the CIA and NIS, and the exposure of intelligence assets. In the finale, Owen, Jang Kyun, Lester, and Yoo Jin reach Vladivostok, where Owen frees Nan Hee and Jang Kyun from Russian intelligence. They escape aboard a U.S. Navy submarine, according to Netflix Tudum’s finale explainer.

Owen gives Jang Kyun two options
On the submarine, Owen tells Jang Kyun that the CIA can report him and Nan Hee dead, allowing them to flee to America, or send him back to Korea to face treason charges. The first option would require Jang Kyun to give up the secrets he holds. The episode ends before he chooses, leaving his fate—and what Owen will do next as an intelligence operative—unresolved.
Nichka’s betrayal has a limit
Nichka tries to sell Owen to Russian intelligence, but her interest in collecting a payout leads her to stop Dawn from killing Owen and Jang Kyun. The escape leaves Nichka in Russian intelligence’s disfavor. Hawley summed up Jang Kyun’s devotion in Netflix Tudum’s explainer: “Somebody who will do anything for love is dangerous.”

Why did Netflix cancel The Recruit?
Netflix’s specific reason was not reported. TheWrap said no explanation was given. It noted that Netflix generally weighs a show’s cost against its audience size, and that production on The Recruit was interrupted by the 2023 Hollywood strikes, with more than two years between the first and second seasons. Those are context and chronology, not confirmed causes of this cancellation.
For audience context, Variety reported that Season 2 of The Recruit drew 5.9 million views in its first four days and ranked second on Netflix’s English-language TV chart. The Night Agent Season 2 recorded 15.2 million views in the same four-day launch window and ranked ahead of it. These launch figures do not establish why Netflix made its decision, nor do they show that competition between the series caused the cancellation.

Where the series leaves its story
The finale brings the immediate rescue mission to an end but leaves its central personal and professional consequences open. Jang Kyun must decide whether to accept a life in America without the secrets he carries or return to Korea to face charges; Owen’s next move is also unknown. With no third season announced, that cliffhanger remains the show’s final on-screen note.
