They establish that the film announced in 2021 was Dragon Ball Super: SUPER HERO, while the 2026 anniversary announcement is for a special video—not a feature film.
What the official announcements confirm
The 2021 film announcement became SUPER HERO
Toei Animation announced a new Dragon Ball Super movie on May 9, 2021, with a planned 2022 release. It described the project as the second film based on Dragon Ball Super and credited Akira Toriyama with its story, screenplay, and character design. On July 24, 2021, the Dragon Ball Official Site announced the title Dragon Ball Super: SUPER HERO. Producer Akio Iyoku said the Japan release date had been set for 2022 and that Toriyama had worked on story development and character illustrations. The 2026 anniversary announcement is for a video
On January 25, 2026, the Dragon Ball Official Site announced the worldwide release of the DRAGON BALL 40th Anniversary Special Video. The announcement identifies it as a video produced by Toei Animation and directed by Naoki Miyahara; it does not describe it as a feature film. Does this mean another movie is happening?
Not on the evidence of these announcements. The 2021 news concerns SUPER HERO, and the 2026 anniversary news concerns a special video. Neither confirms a different new feature film. If a separate announcement is circulating, its original source and wording are needed before the headline claim can be treated as official.

Why merchandise may cause confusion
The Dragon Ball Official Site also documented S.H.Figuarts figures of Gohan, Piccolo, Goku, and Vegeta in anticipation of SUPER HERO. Those collectibles are tied to that earlier film, not evidence of a newly announced movie. Dragon Ball Official Site: SUPER HERO S.H.Figuarts figures.
