The connection to The Lincoln Lawyer is different: in Michael Connelly’s books, Bosch and defense attorney Mickey Haller are half-brothers, but Netflix’s adaptation replaced Bosch’s role in the first novel’s story with Detective Griggs. The books share a universe; the screen adaptations have not established that same relationship.
Is Ballard a Bosch spinoff?
Yes. Amazon describes Ballard as a spinoff of Bosch: Legacy. Renée Ballard, played by Maggie Q, first appeared in the Bosch: Legacy finale. She leads LAPD cold-case investigations and receives help from Harry Bosch, played by Titus Welliver. Amazon calls it the third series set in Connelly’s world and the first spinoff not directly focused on Bosch. Amazon’s series guide and season-one guide describe the connection.
Ballard first appeared in Connelly’s 2017 novel The Late Show. The TV season draws on several Ballard books rather than adapting only one: Amazon describes season one as combining material, and Connelly’s official TV page notes elements from Desert Star and The Dark Hours. Connelly’s Ballard TV-series page provides that source-material detail.
Are Bosch and Mickey Haller brothers?
In Connelly’s novels, yes: Harry Bosch and Mickey Haller are half-brothers. The first Lincoln Lawyer novel brings them into the same story, with their family relationship revealed at the end. They meet again across multiple books. Connelly explained the novel’s connection in a Netflix Tudum interview, and his official series list identifies books featuring both characters.

- The Reversal (2010)
- The Law of Innocence (2020)
- Resurrection Walk (2023)
The list also marks Bosch appearances in Nine Dragons (2009), The Crossing (2015), The Wrong Side of Goodbye (2016), Two Kinds of Truth (2017), The Night Fire (2019), Desert Star (2022), and The Hollow (2026). For Ballard’s books, the sequence begins with The Late Show (2017), followed by Dark Sacred Night (2018), The Night Fire (2019), The Dark Hours (2021), Desert Star (2022), and The Waiting (2024). Connelly’s list marks the latter five as also featuring Bosch.

Does Bosch appear in The Lincoln Lawyer on Netflix?
Not in the role he has in the first novel. The Netflix series introduced Detective Griggs to take Bosch’s place in that part of Haller’s story. Connelly told Tudum that the adaptation needed a new character and would lose the family connection, explaining: “And so we came up with Detective Griggs.” That is an adaptation choice, not a change to the books’ continuity.
Ballard is associated with Prime Video, while The Lincoln Lawyer is a Netflix adaptation. That distinction does not establish that a future television crossover is permanently impossible: a 2023 Associated Press report described the shows as being on separate streaming services at the time, but the sources cited here do not establish a current, definitive rights position. Check each service’s local catalog for availability. The Associated Press report is dated October 18, 2023.
