What happens in “Halloween 4: The Witch”
1. A canceled Halloween leaves the ghosts bored
Jay cancels Halloween, leaving the ghosts without the celebration they had hoped for. Their boredom makes them receptive to Patience’s proposal: a trial that promises spectacle, even if the others initially treat it as entertainment.
2. Patience learns about Sam’s past
Patience, the Puritan ghost, learns that Sam once conjured the dead on an earlier All Hallows’ Eve. To Patience, the act is evidence of witchcraft. She turns that discovery into an accusation against Sam.

3. The ghosts join Patience’s witch trial
The ghosts agree to participate in the trial, at least partly because they are bored. That gives the proceedings an uneasy split: the group sees a diversion, while Patience is serious about judging Sam.
4. Sam is tried in her absence
The trial proceeds while Sam is away helping the Farnsbys move a table they bought at Sam and Jay’s yard sale. She is not present to answer the charge, a fact that becomes crucial when the ghosts think the verdict has had a supernatural consequence.

5. The ghosts find Sam guilty
The ghosts find Sam guilty of witchcraft. The episode’s comic setup does not make Patience’s accusation harmless: she intends to punish Sam, and the guilty verdict feeds that threat.
6. A statue looks like a stone Sam
After the verdict, the ghosts see a statue that resembles Sam and assume Patience has turned her to stone. The apparent transformation is a false alarm, not the result of the trial.

7. The statue belongs to Hetty’s past
The statue is actually a relic from Hetty’s living days. Meanwhile, the real Sam is still away helping the Farnsbys. The reveal punctures the ghosts’ assumption and resolves the immediate fear without undoing the tension around Patience.
8. Patience names the house’s temptations
Patience says the house contains too many temptations, including reality TV. Her complaint makes clear that the modern world around her is not simply a novelty; it is part of why she wants to leave.
9. Patience returns to the dirt and “the others”
Patience announces that she is going back to the dirt and “the others.” The line opens a larger mystery about the ghosts connected to the underground, rather than explaining who they are or what Patience expects to find there.

The episode distinguishes the ghosts’ boredom from Patience’s conviction. The others can treat the trial as a Halloween diversion, but Patience believes Sam’s past conjuring warrants punishment. Her departure shifts the story beyond the trial: the phrase “the others” signals a real element of the show’s world, not merely a story Patience invented.
In a TVLine interview published October 31, 2024, co-showrunner Joe Wiseman said of the others, “I think it would be a strange thing for her to make up.” Co-showrunner Joe Port offered a contemporaneous expectation, not a guarantee about later episodes: “I would say this is probably not the last that we’ve seen of Patience is my bet.”
