“The Hollow of His Hand,” Season 1’s third episode of Daredevil: Born Again, trades much of the premiere’s physical spectacle for a tense trial—and then makes its legal victory feel painfully incomplete. Matt Murdock wins Hector Ayala’s acquittal, but the way he gets there, and what follows, leave the episode’s central question hanging: what does justice mean when winning puts the person you are defending at greater risk?

A courtroom becomes the episode’s arena
After a two-part premiere framed by fights, “The Hollow of His Hand” shifts the contest to the trial of Hector Ayala, the man known as White Tiger. Matt defends Ayala after an undercover officer’s death. The jeopardy comes less from a masked opponent than from testimony, a vulnerable witness and the question of what the jury will believe.
Daniel Chin captured the change in emphasis in his March 12, 2025, recap for The Ringer: “After Born Again started and ended its two-episode premiere with fight scenes, Episode 3 dampens the spectacle to ground the revival series in the courtroom.” That restraint is a strength. The trial gives the series’ familiar conflict—lawful justice versus vigilantism—a setting where Matt cannot simply outfight the problem.

The courtroom material stays compelling because the legal argument is personal. Matt is not only trying to persuade a jury; he is trying to hold onto his belief that the system can deliver justice. When Nicky Torres fails to give the defense the testimony Matt expected, the case turns on a decision that tests that belief.
Matt’s winning argument crosses a line
Matt reveals Ayala’s White Tiger identity in court without his client’s consent. He uses Ayala’s history as a hero to give the jury a different understanding of the man on trial. As courtroom strategy, it is a bold attempt to rescue a failing defense. As an act of representation, it is a serious breach: Matt takes control of Ayala’s most consequential secret precisely when Ayala should have a say in how it is used.
That tension makes the episode richer than a simple triumph of a clever lawyer. Matt’s choice can be read as an expression of his conviction that Ayala deserves to be seen clearly. It can also be read as a familiar danger in Matt’s own version of justice: deciding that his judgment overrides the person he means to protect. But Why Tho? critic Allyson Johnson, in a review published March 12 and updated March 27, 2025, likewise praised the courtroom approach and the scenes between Matt and Ayala while criticizing the identity reveal as a troubling choice.

The acquittal does not feel like safety
Ayala is acquitted. The verdict gives the trial a real resolution, but it does not restore the privacy Matt sacrificed or guarantee Ayala’s safety. After returning to his White Tiger identity, Ayala dies. The abrupt shift from relief to loss is the episode’s major tragedy, turning the win into something Matt cannot comfortably call a success.

Ayala’s death gives force to the idea that a courtroom victory cannot undo the dangers surrounding a masked hero. But it arrives so soon after the trial that it can feel less like the culmination of a fully developed character story than a devastating use of him to deepen Matt’s pain. Johnson’s criticism of the character’s fate points to that cost; The Ringer instead emphasizes how the aftermath intensifies Matt’s conflict over the justice system. Both readings fit the episode’s uneasy ending.
Fisk’s political story stays in the background
Wilson Fisk’s political transition and friction with criminal associates continue alongside the trial, offering a broader view of power operating outside the courtroom. The subplot widens the episode’s world, but it does not compete with Ayala’s case for emotional attention. That focus suits an installment built around Matt’s choices; viewers looking for the premiere’s action-driven momentum may find Fisk’s thread more like connective tissue than a second centerpiece.

Does “The Hollow of His Hand” work?
As a courtroom episode, it does. The trial is legible, the setbacks create pressure, and the identity reveal turns a legal tactic into a moral rupture. The episode’s strongest achievement is making Matt’s win feel compromised without pretending the verdict itself is meaningless. Its weakness is the speed and bluntness of Ayala’s fate: the tragedy lands, but it also risks making the character’s story feel instrumental.
That tension is why the episode lingers. Matt wins the case by exposing a truth Ayala did not authorize him to share, and the victory cannot protect the man whose story made the argument possible. The courtroom drama is electrifying not because it replaces the series’ violence with speeches, but because it shows how a decision made in pursuit of justice can carry consequences beyond the verdict.
