The most revealing behind-the-scenes detail about Moonshiners is how its producers got access: they followed Tim Smith into a guarded community and, during the first season, also embedded with law enforcement pursuing moonshiners. Executive producer Matthew Ostrom described that two-sided approach as unprecedented for unscripted television. It explains how the series took shape, but it does not prove that every scene unfolded exactly as shown.
How did the producers get access to the cast?
Access was difficult because the people Ostrom approached were wary of speaking with an unfamiliar producer about activity involving illegal sales. He said Tim Smith helped change that. After Smith’s father died, Smith wanted to share his father’s craft and recipe, giving the production an opening into the community.

“It was really Smith who opened the door,” Ostrom told Forbes in an interview published June 1, 2023. Ostrom’s account makes Smith’s role in building trust one of the series’ foundational production stories—not simply a casting decision.
What happened behind the scenes during the first season?
According to Ostrom, the crew did not only follow people making moonshine. Producers were also embedded with police trying to catch moonshiners. He summarized the approach this way: “We were embedded with the outlaw and the law, and that had never existed in an unscripted television series before.” That claim about its novelty is Ostrom’s characterization.

The dual access gave the production a way to tell the story from opposing sides: the people involved in the illicit trade and the authorities pursuing them. Ostrom’s interview describes what producers set out to film; it does not independently verify every encounter or establish how any particular scene was captured.
Was Moonshiners real or scripted?
The available public accounts do not settle whether particular scenes were spontaneous, staged, reconstructed, or scripted. Ostrom’s descriptions of following Smith and embedding with law enforcement are useful production details, but they are not a scene-by-scene account or independent proof of what happened on camera. It would go beyond those accounts to call the entire series either wholly scripted or wholly spontaneous.

How did the idea for the series develop?
Ostrom recalled that Discovery approached him about developing a show connected to alcohol. He explored whiskey and bourbon before settling on moonshine. In a 2023 Forbes interview, he said the show had just completed its 12th season at that time; that is a historical marker from the interview, not a current season count.
In a TV Insider interview published March 30, 2025, Ostrom recalled a network request to explore the South for a series concept. He said his team looked for a secretive subculture and distinctive personalities. That retrospective account frames the development process as an exploration of a world and its people, rather than a search for a lead character alone.

Magilla Entertainment describes Moonshiners: Secret Summit as a behind-the-scenes companion hosted by Ostrom, an executive producer of the series. The company says cast members discuss encounters with law enforcement, the moonshiners’ code, and dangers at still sites. Those are the topics Magilla says the companion covers—not independent confirmation of every story discussed.
