Spoilers for all eight episodes of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power Season 2, especially the finale, “Shadow and Flame.” The ending gives Sauron a major victory but does not settle the war: Eregion falls, Celebrimbor dies, and Sauron claims the Nine Rings made for Men. Galadriel survives, the Stranger is revealed as Gandalf, and several other fronts are left poised for conflict.

What happens at the end of Season 2?

The eight-episode season, which premiered August 29, 2024, is set in Tolkien’s Second Age, thousands of years before The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings. Its finale closes some personal arcs while leaving the wider struggle unresolved. Amazon’s Season 2 guide frames the series as a story viewers can follow without reading Tolkien, though familiarity with the books can help illuminate references.

  • Eregion has fallen, and Sauron kills Celebrimbor, the Elven smith who made the Rings.
  • Sauron secures the Nine Rings intended for Men.
  • Galadriel survives her confrontation with Sauron, who takes the Rings she was carrying.
  • The Stranger is named Gandalf.
  • Durin III dies as the Balrog is released in Khazad-dûm.
  • In Númenor, the Faithful lose political ground and Queen-Regent Míriel is arrested.
  • Gil-galad rallies the Elves to fight, while Sauron turns the Orcs against Adar.

These are immediate outcomes, not a resolution of the conflict. The finale leaves the next stage of the war—and the fates of the separate fronts—open.

Why does Celebrimbor call Sauron “Lord of the Rings”?

Working under the guise of Annatar, a supposed divine emissary, Sauron manipulates Celebrimbor into making more Rings. Celebrimbor eventually recognizes that Sauron’s ambition is bound to the power of the Rings and turns Annatar’s earlier promise back on him: Sauron will be the “Lord of the Rings.” It is not simply a flattering title. The line warns that the Rings can master the one who seeks to command them.

Co-showrunner J.D. Payne explained the reversal this way: “By the way, you don’t want to be Lord of the Rings because they’ll only master you.” Co-showrunner Patrick McKay said Celebrimbor understands that “Sauron is so driven that Celebrimbor knows he’ll never be able to escape from it.” Their explanation connects Sauron’s fixation on the Rings to the later idea that he puts so much of himself into his creations that his existence becomes tied to them. The finale foreshadows that trajectory; it does not show the One Ring being forged. Read the showrunners’ October 3, 2024 interview with Vanity Fair.

Why is Celebrimbor’s death different?

The series gives Celebrimbor a private death in his final scene with Sauron. McKay said Tolkien’s accounts describe Celebrimbor being shot with arrows and paraded; the showrunners chose a more intimate version to preserve the personal confrontation. That explanation describes the adaptation choice, not every difference between the series and Tolkien’s writings. The interview discusses the decision.

Does Galadriel die, and what does Sauron take?

No. Sauron wounds Galadriel with Morgoth’s crown, but she survives and retains Nenya. He takes the other Rings she had been carrying. The closing image also leaves Sauron holding Fëanor’s hammer. That image does not confirm what he will do with it, and the finale does not depict him forging the One Ring. The episode recap details the confrontation and its final images.

Who is the Stranger?

The Stranger is confirmed as Gandalf within the Prime Video series. That reveal establishes his name in the show’s own continuity; it does not establish that the adaptation follows every detail or chronology of Gandalf’s appearances in Tolkien’s written histories. Director Charlotte Brändström described the closing image as a move toward fighting back. Brändström discusses the finale with TheWrap.

What happens in Khazad-dûm, Númenor, and Eregion?

Khazad-dûm: Durin III dies and the Balrog is released

Durin III’s death ends his immediate arc. The Balrog’s release opens a new and dangerous threat beneath the Dwarven realm.

Númenor: the Faithful lose power

The Faithful are ousted, and Queen-Regent Míriel is arrested. The finale shows their political position worsening without resolving what will happen to Númenor.

Eregion: the city falls, but the Elves regroup

Eregion is lost, yet the Elves do not simply retreat from the story. Gil-galad calls them to fight, setting up resistance to Sauron’s advance.

The Orcs: Sauron turns them against Adar

As Adar begins to ally with Galadriel, Sauron turns the Orcs against him. The shift further unsettles the alliances that had shaped the conflict.

What does the finale leave unresolved?

The season ends with Sauron holding more immediate power, but it does not answer how the resistance will respond or how any of the separate conflicts will ultimately end. It establishes future conflicts rather than showing their outcomes. In particular, the finale does not show the One Ring’s creation, explain a future use for Fëanor’s hammer, or settle the political fate of Númenor.
