Spoilers: This explains the released film’s ending and post-credits scene. The asterisk in Thunderbolts* points to the team’s final public name: the New Avengers. Valentina Allegra de Fontaine gives the group that name after they save New York, and the end-credits logo confirms the rebrand. “Thunderbolts,” meanwhile, comes from Yelena Belova’s childhood soccer team—not from an official tribute to Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross.
What does the asterisk in Thunderbolts* mean?
It signals the film’s title reveal: the group known as the Thunderbolts is publicly renamed the New Avengers. At the end, Valentina presents the team under that name at a press conference; the end-credits title treatment reinforces it. The punctuation is a title-change punchline, not a separate unresolved footnote. TIME and TechRadar both describe the reveal in their post-release accounts (TIME; TechRadar).
How the ending sets up the name change
The team’s crisis centers on Bob and the Void
Marvel’s official synopsis introduces an unconventional group of antiheroes—Yelena Belova, Bucky Barnes, Red Guardian, Ghost, Taskmaster and John Walker—drawn into a death trap set by Valentina. Their mission forces them to confront painful parts of their pasts (Disney Movies).
In the climax, Bob Reynolds’s powers unleash his dark alter ego, the Void, across New York. The team’s route through the crisis is not simply to overpower him: they enter the Shadow Realm, face traumatic memories and try to reach Bob. After they return to the city, Valentina claims the moment and introduces them to the public as the New Avengers. The group accepts the name while holding leverage over her because they know about her conduct and secret project (TIME; TechRadar).

Valentina’s announcement is a rebrand, not the team’s origin story
Valentina turns the group into a public-facing asset after they help save the city. That opportunism is distinct from the personal backstory behind the word “Thunderbolts”: the soccer team name existed in Yelena’s childhood, before this public identity.
Why are they called the Thunderbolts?
TIME reports that “Thunderbolts” was the name of Yelena’s childhood soccer team, the West Chesapeake Bay Thunderbolts. Red Guardian coached the team while the family lived undercover, and it reportedly never won a match. The name is therefore an affectionate, faintly absurd family callback—not an allusion to Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross (TIME).

What happens in the post-credits scene?
The post-credits scene is a separate joke about the New Avengers name, not the source of the asterisk reveal. TIME reports that Sam Wilson, the new Captain America, is suing the team for copyright infringement. Red Guardian proposes a workaround: “New Avengerz,” spelled with a “z.”
What the film’s emotional conflict adds to the reveal
The title joke lands after a story about characters facing painful histories and isolation. TIME describes grief, regret, abuse, experimentation and addiction among the characters; ABC’s account highlights isolation and depression as themes. These are story themes, not clinical diagnoses. Their shared effort to reach Bob gives the finale an emotional resolution alongside the public name change.
