His son Steven McBee Jr. was reported as saying the family wanted to keep their father out of public view while the case was ongoing. That explanation was reported from a People interview, but the interview itself was not directly verified here, so it should be treated as a reported family explanation—not a confirmed production statement.
Why was Steve McBee Sr. absent from season 2?
The available reporting connects McBee’s absence to the federal case, rather than establishing that he chose to leave the series, was fired, or had a creative dispute with the production. His son’s reported explanation was that the family wanted to keep their father out of public view while the case continued. The report reproducing that account is an IMDb news index citing a People interview; because the underlying interview was not directly verified, the explanation should remain attributed and qualified.
The legal case became public in November 2024, when the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Western District of Missouri announced McBee’s guilty plea. That provides important context for his absence, but it does not by itself prove the show’s producers made a particular casting decision.
What was the federal case about?
On November 5, 2024, the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Western District of Missouri said Steve A. McBee pleaded guilty to one count of federal crop-insurance fraud. The conduct he admitted occurred from 2018 through 2020, according to the Department of Justice announcement.

The DOJ described several different financial measures in the plea announcement. They are not interchangeable:
- $4,022,123: the total loss claimed by the government under the plea terms.
- $2,605,943: crop-insurance benefits the DOJ said McBee received to which he was not entitled.
- $552,980: federal premium subsidies the DOJ said he received to which he was not entitled.
- $3,158,923: the combined benefits and subsidies in the two preceding figures.
The $4,022,123 claimed-loss figure is not the same measure as the $3,158,923 in benefits and subsidies the DOJ said McBee received.

What sentence did McBee receive?
When the DOJ announced the guilty plea in 2024, it said McBee faced a statutory maximum of 30 years in prison. The department also stressed that the maximum was not a prediction of the outcome: the court would determine the sentence under the advisory guidelines and other statutory factors.
DTN reported on October 16, 2025, that McBee was sentenced to 24 months in prison and ordered to pay $4 million in restitution. DTN noted that the court initially posted a 41-month judgment, then amended it to 24 months the same day. The amended 24-month term is the reported sentence, not the earlier posting.

Where does the show fit in?
The DOJ identified McBee as a star of The McBee Dynasty: Real American Cowboys and said in November 2024 that the series was streaming on Peacock. That establishes Peacock as the platform associated with the series at that time; it does not confirm whether season 2 is currently available in every region. Check Peacock’s current catalog for local availability.
