Sebastian Stan and Scarlett Johansson are reported to be joining The Batman Part II as Harvey and Gilda Dent, respectively, giving the sequel a significant new character thread. The movie is no longer scheduled for 2027: its current reported release date is February 18, 2028, and production was temporarily paused in October 2026.
Who are the new additions to The Batman Part II?
There is more than one answer to the headline’s singular “new addition.” Director Matt Reeves introduced multiple cast members in May 2026, including Scarlett Johansson, Sebastian Stan, Charles Dance, Sebastian Koch and Brian Tyree Henry. Variety and TheWrap reported the announcements; Koch and Henry’s characters were not disclosed in TheWrap’s report.

Stan and Johansson are linked to the Dent family
Trade reporting identifies Stan as Harvey Dent and Johansson as Gilda Dent, Harvey’s wife. The Los Angeles Times describes the casting in those terms, but these character identities should be understood as reported roles, not as a full official account of the characters’ arcs. Neither the film’s villain nor the Dents’ precise place in the plot has been confirmed in the reporting cited here. (Los Angeles Times; TheWrap)
Other cast members are returning
Robert Pattinson is returning as Bruce Wayne/Batman. Reporting also lists Jeffrey Wright, Andy Serkis and Colin Farrell, alongside Jayme Lawson and Gil Perez-Abraham, among the returning cast. (Los Angeles Times; TheWrap)

Why the Dent casting matters—and what it does not confirm
Harvey and Gilda Dent give the sequel a recognizable pair from Batman comics and a potential story connection beyond Bruce Wayne’s familiar Gotham allies. Their reported casting makes the Dent family a major point of interest, but it does not establish that the film adapts a particular comic, that Harvey becomes a villain, or how either character’s story unfolds.
For comic-book context, Batman: The Long Halloween features the Dent characters. A discussion of their connection to that story is available at ComicBook.com. That is optional related reading, not evidence that The Batman Part II is adapting the comic.

What is known about the story?
Variety reports that the sequel will have a winter setting and that Reeves has said he wants to focus more on Bruce Wayne, explaining that the first film was so centered on Batman. The plot itself remains largely undisclosed, according to the Los Angeles Times. No rumored villain or specific comic-book adaptation should be treated as settled fact.
When does The Batman Part II come out?
The current reported theatrical release date is February 18, 2028, according to the Los Angeles Times and TheWrap. The earlier October 1, 2027 date has been superseded. DC and Warner Bros. Discovery’s original slate announcement from January 2023 listed an earlier 2025 date, which is also historical rather than current. (Los Angeles Times; TheWrap; DC / Warner Bros. Discovery Pressroom)

Why was production paused?
On October 5, 2026, TheWrap reported that production had been temporarily paused while Reeves dealt with a family matter. TheWrap quoted a Warner Bros. and DC Studios statement: “Production on ‘The Batman: Part II’ has been temporarily paused while Matt Reeves focuses on a family matter.” The statement added, “Matt has the full support of DC Studios and we look forward to continuing the journey soon.” The report did not give a resumption date or say how long the pause would last.
That status is a dated update, not a prediction about the film’s eventual schedule: the latest report cited here gives no duration for the pause. (TheWrap)
