Its moody visuals and romantic premise give it appeal, but the turns can feel telegraphed and the melodrama sometimes blunts their impact. If you want atmosphere and tangled relationships more than airtight plotting, it may suit you; if you want to be genuinely surprised, temper your expectations.
What is The Gardener about?
The Gardener, originally titled El jardinero, is a Spanish-language Netflix drama and mystery-thriller released April 11, 2025. The six-episode series was created by Miguel Sáez Carral and stars Álvaro Rico, Cecilia Suárez and Catalina Sopelana, according to Rotten Tomatoes and Heaven of Horror.
Elmer works with his mother, La China Jurado, at a garden center that conceals a murder-for-hire operation. A childhood accident has left him emotionally numb. When he is assigned to kill Violeta, a preschool teacher, he develops feelings for her instead, disrupting both the assignment and his mother’s business. The setup places romantic attachment against the demands of a criminal enterprise, giving the series its central source of tension. The synopsis is corroborated by Rotten Tomatoes and Time.
What works: atmosphere and visual style
The review’s strongest praise is for the series’ presentation: moody lighting, lush cinematography and a soundtrack that help create an appealing, shadowed world. Those elements fit the contrast between the garden center’s ordinary public face and the violence behind it. The review sees style as a genuine strength, even when the plotting does not deliver an equally startling experience. Read the PeepsTune review for that assessment.

Why the twists may not land
The central reservation is that several developments feel signposted before they arrive. The review argues that this predictability, combined with turns that edge toward melodrama, weakens the shock the story appears to be building toward. That is a critical judgment, not a claim that every viewer will read the plot the same way: audiences who enjoy heightened emotional conflict may find the same material more engaging than viewers looking for tightly concealed surprises.
Other reviews underline that the response is mixed rather than uniform. But Why Tho? praises the atmosphere and some revelations while criticizing the early pacing, sound design and ending. Heaven of Horror likewise finds potential in the premise but says it does not fully deliver on that reviewer’s expectations. The points of disagreement are useful viewing cues: this is a better fit if mood and relationship drama matter as much to you as plot mechanics, and a riskier pick if a fast start and a firmly resolved payoff are priorities.

Spoilers: Violeta’s connection to Xoan’s death
Warning: spoilers for a major plot revelation.
As reported in Time’s explanation of the ending, Violeta was involved in Xoan’s death. After an argument, she pushed him from a bridge and concealed what happened. The revelation complicates the image of Violeta as simply the target caught in Elmer’s story, while raising the question of whether the series’ final turns add meaningful complexity or push the drama further into melodrama. The characters’ neurological experiences belong to the fiction; they should not be treated as medical information.

Should you watch The Gardener?
Choose it for a stylish Spanish-language crime drama built around a hitman, his mother and an increasingly complicated relationship with his intended victim. The review’s reservations matter most if you want twists that consistently surprise or a payoff that feels conclusive; the other reviews also flag slow early pacing or an ending that may not satisfy everyone. For viewers willing to trade some narrative surprise for atmosphere and romantic-family melodrama, the premise may still be enough to make the six episodes worthwhile.
