These choices and confrontations put the characters on different paths just before the finale.
What happens at the end of “The After Hours”?
Outie Mark refuses to return to Lumon, where the company expects his innie to finish the Cold Harbor file. With Devon and Cobel, he pursues a plan connected to Gemma. The episode’s final turn is innie Mark waking at the Kier-owned cabins, with Devon and Cobel there. His outie has brought him into a situation he did not choose and cannot yet understand.
On the severed floor, Helly is trying to memorize Irving’s directions toward the Exports Hall and the dark hallway when Jame Eagan appears. Burt has taken Irving to a train station and tells him to leave town. After Gretchen rejects Dylan’s outie, innie Dylan signs a resignation form. Each ending creates a decision or immediate danger; none establishes what the character’s future will be.
What does Mark waking at the cabins mean?
The cabin scene puts the season’s split between Mark’s two selves in immediate focus. Outie Mark has made a plan involving Devon and Cobel, but innie Mark wakes without the outside knowledge that led to it. He must now deal with the people and circumstances his outie chose to involve him in.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
The scene is a setup, not a completed rescue. The episode does not show whether Mark and Gemma will be reunited, what Cobel ultimately intends, or how the innie will respond once he learns more. Apple’s official synopsis is deliberately brief: “Mark and Devon team with an ally. Helly investigates further.”
What does Jame mean by “You tricked me. My Helly”?
Jame’s words establish that he feels deceived and speaks of Helly possessively. They do not explain exactly what he thinks she did, or what he plans to do next. Helly’s attempt to follow Irving’s route toward the dark hallway is interrupted before the episode shows where that route leads.

Any explanation beyond Jame’s accusation is a theory, not an answer supplied by this episode. The cliffhanger leaves Helly’s investigation—and the danger posed by Jame—open for the finale.
Is Irving really leaving?
Burt takes Irving to a train station and tells him to leave town. The send-off follows Burt’s admission that he has done dirty work for Lumon, alongside his assurance that he does not want Irving harmed. The episode confirms that Irving is sent away, but it does not confirm that he is permanently out of the story.

John Turturro described the scene’s uncertainty to TheWrap: “Because you think it could be the end, but it maybe it’s not the end.” That ambiguity fits the scene: Burt’s action gives Irving a route away from immediate danger without settling what happens to either man.
Does Dylan’s resignation mean he has left Lumon?
After Gretchen rejects a future with Dylan’s outie, innie Dylan signs a resignation form. The signature is an immediate response to that emotional blow, but the episode does not establish whether the resignation takes effect, whether it lasts, or what happens next. It is not confirmation that Dylan has definitively left Lumon for good.

Has Milchick turned against Lumon?
Milchick tells Drummond to “devour feculence,” a phrase episode coverage glosses as “eat shit.” Tramell Tillman, who plays Milchick, told TV Insider, “What I wanted to happen in that moment was for Milchick to start the awakening, if you will.” The outburst signals resistance in that moment, but it does not prove Milchick has fully defected or explain what he will do next.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why is the episode called “The After Hours”?
The title refers to the 1960 The Twilight Zone episode “The After Hours.” In that story, a woman discovers that a seemingly ordinary department-store visit conceals an unusual identity: she is a mannequin who has been living among humans. TIME reports that Cobel quotes its opening narration—“Miss Marsha White on the ninth floor, specialties department, looking for a gold thimble”—as a code at a severed birthing cottage.

The connection invites questions about identity, hidden roles, and confinement within a system. It does not establish a particular fate for Helly or Gemma; predictions that the reference points to one character’s outcome remain speculation.
How does Episode 9 set up the finale?
“The After Hours” is primarily a convergence episode. Mark is awake at the cabins, inside a plan his outie set in motion but did not share with him. Helly is still pursuing the route toward the dark hallway, with Jame confronting her before she can continue. Irving has been sent away, and Dylan has signed a form whose consequences are still unknown.
Those unresolved threads leave the finale to address both immediate choices and the larger questions surrounding Lumon, Gemma, and the severed employees. TIME describes Episode 9 as largely setting up the finale, with many season questions still unanswered. The episode’s cliffhangers are best read as deliberate open questions—not revelations about what will happen next.
