That is a clear statement about Hamilton’s future, not an announcement that the Terminator franchise is over. The six films’ roughly $2.075 billion in listed worldwide box-office grosses—about $2.1 billion when rounded—also does not mean the series is profitable or that another film is assured.
Will Linda Hamilton ever play Sarah Connor again?
Hamilton has publicly said she is done with the role. In 2024, she told ComicBook.com: “I’m done. I’m done. I have nothing more to say. The story’s been told, and it’s been done to death.” In a 2025 interview with SYFY WIRE, she again said she had completed the Sarah Connor “bookends” of her career, referring to Terminator: Dark Fate as the endpoint.
Those are Hamilton’s own statements about her willingness to return. They do not establish that the rights holders have permanently ended the franchise, nor do they rule out a film centered on other characters or made by another creative team. No current official announcement of a next film is established by the available reporting.
Why does Hamilton see Sarah Connor differently from an icon?
Hamilton’s view of Sarah is more ambivalent than the usual shorthand of a fearless action hero. She described her as “a woman in hell” who “makes some really bad choices,” adding, “She’s not a good mother, she’s a good fighter!” That is Hamilton’s interpretation of a traumatized, flawed character—not a claim that viewers cannot admire Sarah or read her differently.

The distinction matters because Sarah’s importance to the series is not simply a matter of screen time. In a 2019 interview with The Ringer, Arnold Schwarzenegger said Sarah was “such an important part of the story,” while the article characterized her as the franchise’s “tortured heart.” Her centrality helps explain why Hamilton’s return was a meaningful part of Dark Fate’s pitch. It does not guarantee that audiences will buy tickets.
How much has the Terminator franchise made at the box office?
Adding the six theatrical-film worldwide grosses listed on The Numbers produces approximately $2.075 billion, which rounds to $2.1 billion. This is a box-office gross total, not the amount studios kept and not a measure of profit. Totals can differ among databases because of reporting and re-release accounting; for example, The Ringer reported about $520 million for Terminator 2: Judgment Day in 2019, while The Numbers’ current franchise listing gives a different accumulated figure.

Did Terminator: Dark Fate make money?
The Numbers lists Dark Fate at $250,367,666 in worldwide gross against a $185 million production budget. The comparison signals a weak commercial result relative to the production budget, but it is not a profit calculation: theatrical gross is shared with exhibitors, and the budget figure does not include marketing, distribution, or other costs. The available figures do not support a precise claim about the film’s net loss.
Hamilton herself voiced concern about the franchise’s box-office prospects in 2019, telling CinemaBlend, “I really think that box office is gonna be the thing that killed Terminator.” CinemaBlend reported that comment in coverage of the film’s commercial performance. The later numbers underline the difference between bringing back a beloved character and producing a hit: Hamilton’s presence did not by itself assure Dark Fate’s success.

Can Terminator continue without Sarah Connor?
The series has done so before. The Ringer’s retrospective notes that Terminator 3 continued without Sarah Connor, whose death is placed off-screen in that installment. That precedent shows the franchise can move on without Hamilton, though it does not answer whether a new version would retain the character’s emotional pull for viewers.
The commercial question and the story question are separate. Sarah can remain fundamental to the franchise’s identity while a film without her is possible; likewise, her return can attract attention without guaranteeing a successful revival. Hamilton’s position is the clearest current answer about her own participation: she says she has finished with Sarah Connor. It is not proof that the broader franchise has reached its final chapter.
