CBS’s episode guide followed McGee through the season’s high-stakes storylines, but those plot descriptions are not a departure announcement. In current listings checked October 8, 2026, CBS and Paramount Press Express still identify McGee as part of the team and Murray as a star; that reflects current promotion, not a guarantee about future seasons.
What happened to McGee in Season 22?
Season 22 ran from “Empty Nest” on October 14, 2024, to “Nexus” on May 5, 2025, across 20 episodes, according to CBS’s official episode guide. Its descriptions give McGee consequential material, but do not say he leaves NCIS.

- Episode 12, “Fun and Games” (February 10, 2025): McGee is questioned by the Pentagon about his book.
- Episode 19, “Irreconcilable Differences” (April 28, 2025): His career and credibility are on the line as he investigates a deputy director.
- Season finale, “Nexus” (May 5, 2025): The guide lists the finale, but does not describe it as McGee’s exit.
Those are reasons a viewer might worry about his professional standing, not evidence that the character quits or that Murray departed the cast.
Why did Sean Murray’s comments raise concern?
In an interview reported by TVLine on November 20, 2025—after Season 22 had ended—Murray addressed rumors and the show’s capacity for surprises. He said, “No one is ever quite safe on this show,” and, “Things can take big, unexpected turns with characters.” The remarks acknowledge uncertainty in NCIS storytelling; they do not announce that he is leaving or establish that McGee’s Season 22 story was an exit arc. TVLine’s interview report is the source for those attributed comments.

What do official cast listings say?
As of October 8, 2026, CBS’s NCIS series page describes McGee as part of the team, and Paramount Press Express’s NCIS listing includes Sean Murray among the stars. These current official listings support that he remains associated with the series at that date. They are not promises about what a future season may do.
Paramount Press Express’s June 2024 Sean Murray biography noted that he celebrated 20 years playing McGee in November 2023. That is a milestone in his tenure, not evidence either for or against a later departure.

How to read the evidence
| Evidence | What it establishes | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| CBS Season 22 episode descriptions | McGee faced scrutiny over his book and career during the season. | That he left the team or that Murray left the cast. |
| Murray’s November 2025 comments, reported by TVLine | The actor said characters can face unexpected turns and no one is entirely safe. | A confirmed departure, or a statement specifically about Season 22. |
| Current CBS and Paramount Press Express listings, checked October 8, 2026 | McGee and Murray remain associated with the series in those listings. | A guarantee of future appearances or employment. |
Was Season 22 McGee’s last season?
The available evidence does not establish that it was. CBS’s episode guide gives McGee storylines in Season 22 without identifying them as a farewell, and current official listings continue to include him. Murray’s later comments invite speculation about the show’s willingness to surprise viewers, but are not confirmation that he is leaving.
