It is the season’s most concentrated stretch of horror so far, and the human cruelty at its center gives the episode unusual weight. The sequence is powerful, if not perfectly balanced: Bob Gray’s origin thread adds context, but the military plot and the aftermath dilute some of the urgency.
What happens in “The Black Spot”?
A vigilante group attacks the Black Spot, a gathering place sheltering Hank and others. The attackers trap people inside the burning building and shoot at those trying to escape. Hallorann helps Hank and Ronnie get out. Rich stays behind to protect Marge and dies. The episode also opens a thread about Bob Gray and Ingrid’s past, then follows the fire’s losses with further military developments and a suspenseful closing turn.
The sequence expands the novel’s brief account of the Black Spot into an extended assault. Its horror comes not from a supernatural force taking over the scene, but from people choosing to inflict violence on one another. That distinction is central to the episode’s strongest idea.
Why does the Black Spot attack hit so hard?
Human violence, not It, drives the massacre
Director and co-creator Andy Muschietti described the Black Spot as one of the story’s major tent poles and a destination toward which the season’s separate threads were moving. He also stressed that the massacre is an atrocity committed by Derry’s people, not by It. As he put it, “Humans are capable of doing things as bad or worse than this monster.” The scene makes that point through its physical danger: the fire, the blocked escape and the gunfire create a human-made nightmare that does not need a creature to make it horrifying.

The staging makes escape feel precarious
The attack is frantic and immersive, with close action photography that places the viewer near the chaos. The added danger of people being trapped in a burning building while attackers fire at those trying to flee gives the sequence a harsh clarity: survival depends on choices made under pressure, not on a clean rescue plan. The action is forceful without turning the violence into a detached spectacle.
Hallorann’s decision to help others rather than simply save himself gives the set-piece a character pivot as well as a physical one. Muschietti identified that choice as a key moment for Hallorann. It matters because the episode’s people are not only victims of Derry’s violence; some still choose to risk themselves for one another.

Does Rich’s death feel earned?
Rich’s sacrifice is the episode’s emotional center. Staying behind to protect Marge gives his death a clear, immediate purpose, and the relationship has been established before this moment, so the scene draws on more than the shock of losing a character. The grief is painful because the episode has given the bond enough room to matter.
The creative decision is plainly meant to hurt. Muschietti said, “Everybody loves him. So it’s hard, but the kid had to go.” The line captures both the intended impact and the risk: a death can feel devastating without automatically feeling profound. Here, Rich’s choice gives the loss emotional logic, even as the abruptness of the violence keeps it from becoming a tidy or comforting sacrifice.

Does Bob Gray’s origin story strengthen the episode?
The opening explores Bob Gray and Ingrid’s history, including the clown’s appeal to children. It broadens the episode’s supernatural mythology and gives the Pennywise thread a more personal frame. The contrast between this material and the Black Spot’s human atrocity is potentially revealing: the series is tracing both the monster’s influence and the cruelty already present in Derry.
But the origin material also competes with the attack for attention. The fire is so immediate and emotionally complete as the episode’s central event that returning to mythology can feel like a change of subject rather than a deepening of the same crisis. The thread enriches the season’s larger picture more than it strengthens the episode’s momentum in the moment.

Where does the episode lose focus?
The military storyline and the post-fire aftermath slow the episode after its most intense stretch. The shift can be useful in principle: a community has to live with what happened, and the larger forces around Derry do not disappear when the flames die down. In execution, however, the military developments have less emotional force than the Black Spot sequence, so the episode’s momentum slackens just when the consequences should be gathering weight.
The closing suspense restores some forward pull with another Pennywise-related turn. It is an effective hook, but it also redirects attention toward what comes next before the episode has fully settled into the losses it has just shown. That tension is the cost of ending on a tease: the finale gains momentum, while the aftermath gets less space to resonate.

How does the episode adapt Stephen King’s novel?
The series expands the Black Spot interlude in Stephen King’s It into a sustained sequence, heightening the peril by trapping people in the building and having the attackers shoot at those escaping. The adaptation makes the event more immediate and gives it room to carry the season’s human-versus-supernatural theme. It is not a scene-for-scene rendering of the novel, so the book is best approached as source material rather than an episode guide. Readers interested in the original can read Stephen King’s It novel.
Is “The Black Spot” the best episode of Welcome to Derry so far?
It is the season’s most focused episode when the Black Spot attack is on screen: the horror, character choices and central idea converge in one sustained event. The episode is less controlled around that anchor. The Bob Gray material widens the mythology, the military plot breaks the tension, and the ending prioritizes a hook over a longer reckoning with grief. Those uneven transitions keep “perfectly executed” from being an objective verdict, but the set-piece is strong enough to make this the season’s clearest high point to date.
Rotten Tomatoes listed the episode at 86% on its Tomatometer from 7 reviews in a 2025 review snapshot; that aggregate can change as reviews are added. Critics’ reactions were not uniform: the page’s review excerpts include praise for the performances and emotional impact, alongside criticism of clunky narrative movement and an unconvincing long take. The varied responses fit the episode’s strengths and weak spots: its central sequence is gripping, while the material around it is more divisive.
