The remark followed a Perth stop on his comedy tour, but it was a joke—not a current official ranking. The government data cited in coverage is from 2018 and cannot establish Perth’s position today.
What did Jeremy Piven say about Perth?
Asked to name his favourite place in Australia, Piven recalled visiting Perth during his tour and said: “In the middle of my tour, we headed over to Perth, which is the meth capital of Australia… I don’t know if you know that.” He followed it with a joke: “And so in the spirit of Donald Trump, I want to rename Perth, ‘Merth’.”

PerthNow’s Zach Margolius reported the exchange on 13 August 2025, attributing the remarks to an interview with the Daily Mail. The interview took place at the Sydney premiere of Primitive War. PerthNow’s report provides the account of what Piven said.
Why had Piven recently visited Perth?
Piven performed at the Astor Theatre in Mount Lawley on 6 August 2025 as part of a tour that also included Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane and Adelaide. He praised the Australian audiences, saying: “Sold out houses… It was just incredible. I loved it.”

In a July 2025 interview ahead of the Australia and New Zealand tour, Variety Australia described it as his first proper tour of both countries and noted that he had performed special shows in Australia in late 2024. That earlier interview provides tour context, not separate confirmation of the Perth remark.
Does the evidence show Perth was Australia’s “meth capital”?
No current national ranking is established by the evidence cited here. Piven’s phrase was his characterization, not an official statistic.

- Shrink-wrapped
A Western Australian Government statement published on 9 October 2018 summarized Australian Criminal Intelligence Commission wastewater results. It said Perth’s methamphetamine wastewater readings were 60 per cent below their October 2016 peak and, in that comparison, below the national average and below Adelaide, Melbourne and Darwin. The statement said the study compared samples from 47 Australian locations. These are historical wastewater findings—not a current ranking or a measure of individual prevalence, arrests, seizures or harm.
The 2018 statement quoted then-WA Police Minister Michelle Roberts saying: “These latest results show meth use in Perth has dropped significantly since its peak in 2016.” The Western Australian Government statement is a dated account of those results; it does not settle Perth’s relative position in 2025 or 2026.

What else did Piven say about Perth?
Piven also praised a cigar bar he called “The Social Club,” describing it as one of the best cigar lounges he had visited. PerthNow suggested he may have meant Cigar Social, a private members’ lounge in West Perth, but reported that the business did not confirm or deny his attendance. The venue identification therefore remains unverified.
PerthNow also notes Piven’s role in the Australian production Numbered Lives. The report does not connect that film or Primitive War to a recommendation for viewers.
