Spoilers throughout. In Keeper (2025), Malcolm’s secret is a centuries-old bargain with supernatural creatures in the woods, sustained by sacrificing women. Liz is meant to be his next victim, but the creatures spare her because she resembles their mother. Their protection turns against Malcolm, and Liz kills him with the honey jar. She survives, though the final image suggests she has been changed or bound to the creatures; exactly what that means remains open to interpretation.

How is Malcolm more than 200 years old?

Malcolm’s ordinary-seeming life hides a supernatural arrangement that has kept him alive for centuries. Ending explainers describe the bargain as dependent on sacrificing women to the creatures in the woods. They connect the creatures’ origin to a pregnant woman from the distant past who was killed, after which her offspring became supernatural beings. The film’s reveal, as summarized by those explainers, does not establish a complete set of rules for how the bargain works.

This is the secret behind Malcolm’s apparent longevity, not a fully explained mythology. Knockout Horror and Plot Explained both describe a history stretching back more than two centuries, but their accounts are secondary explanations rather than official transcripts: Knockout Horror’s ending explanation and Plot Explained’s ending explanation.

Why don’t the creatures kill Liz?

Malcolm intends Liz to be the next sacrifice. Instead, the creatures recognize her resemblance to their mother and accept her in that connection. That response explains why she is spared, but it does not prove that she literally is their mother, has been reincarnated, or has become a new host. Those are possible readings, not settled facts.

What happens to Liz after Malcolm’s plan fails?

Liz survives the encounter, but the ending does not show her simply returning to her old life. Her calmness and altered appearance—especially the final image of her dark eyes—suggest she is aligned with, or affected by, the creatures. Plot Explained reads the image as Liz’s assimilation into their supernatural world; the film leaves room for a less final interpretation, in which she has been accepted or influenced without a clearly defined permanent transformation.

Tatiana Maslany, the film’s star, acknowledged that the final creature image invites interpretation. In a spoiler-marked Radio Times interview and ending explainer published November 14, 2025, she said, “I can’t wait to hear what people’s ideas are on what that means, what that final boss means.” Her comment supports treating Liz’s ultimate status as deliberately open rather than claiming one definitive explanation: Radio Times’ interview and ending discussion.

Why does Liz kill Malcolm with the honey jar?

As the creatures turn against Malcolm, his unnatural longevity ends and he rapidly ages. Liz then forces his head into the honey jar associated with the creatures’ mother, killing him. The ending explainers agree on the broad sequence, though they differ in how they frame the jar’s imagery.

The scene can be read as a reversal: Malcolm used women as sacrifices to preserve himself, and Liz ends his life through an object tied to the mother whose offspring sustained his bargain. That is a thematic interpretation, not a confirmed statement of the supernatural rules. The death also completes Liz’s immediate escape from the role Malcolm chose for her, while leaving her future with the creatures unresolved.

What the ending confirms—and what it leaves uncertain

  • Established by the ending accounts: Malcolm’s longevity is linked to a supernatural bargain and women’s sacrifices; Liz is intended as a victim; the creatures spare her because she resembles their mother; and Liz kills Malcolm with the honey jar.
  • Suggested, but not definitively settled: Liz may become a mother or protector to the creatures, or may simply be spared because of her resemblance. Her dark eyes may indicate a lasting transformation or a supernatural influence that the film does not define.
  • Not explained as a complete system: the precise terms of Malcolm’s bargain and the full nature of Liz’s final bond with the creatures.

Keeper is directed by Osgood Perkins, also credited as Oz Perkins, and written by Nick Lepard. Disney+’s US catalog lists it as a 2025 horror/thriller with a runtime of 1 hour 38 minutes; release dates and streaming availability vary by territory.
