Spoilers for Fire & Blood and future events in House of the Dragon: In George R. R. Martin’s book, Aemond Targaryen dies in the Battle Above the Gods Eye, fighting his uncle Daemon in the air. The television series had not shown the duel by the end of season three, which aired on August 9, 2026, and no season-four episode or release date for it has been confirmed.

How does Aemond die in the book?

In Fire & Blood, Aemond rides Vhagar into a final duel with Daemon Targaryen, who rides Caraxes, above the Gods Eye. Daemon leaps from Caraxes onto Vhagar and drives his Valyrian steel sword, Dark Sister, into Aemond’s blind eye. The dragons plunge into the lake, and Aemond dies.

This account describes the book’s version of the event; it is not a scene already shown in the television adaptation. For the fuller Dance of the Dragons narrative, see George R. R. Martin’s Fire & Blood.

Has Aemond’s death happened in the show?

No. At the end of season three, Aemond was still alive, and the Battle Above the Gods Eye had not been depicted. HBO describes House of the Dragon as based on Martin’s book, but the adaptation may change the source material’s events.

When will the Gods Eye battle happen on television?

There is no confirmed season, episode, or release date for the duel. Season three premiered on HBO Max in the United States on June 21, 2026, at 9 p.m. ET, and Warner Bros. Discovery announced an eight-episode weekly run ending with its finale on August 9. Those dates establish the season-three schedule, not when Aemond’s death will be adapted.

GamesRadar+ reported that showrunner Ryan Condal described season four as the series’ final season and said early scripts were being shown to HBO. That points to season four as the intended final act, but does not identify an episode or confirm the battle’s placement.

In June 2026, Matt Smith, who plays Daemon, said he did not know the script details: “One assumes they’re headed there, but you never know. It’s quite present in the story, isn’t it? Even in the book, it’s been illustrated. It’s surely got to head there, but I’m not privy to the details of it until the script.” That is Smith’s expectation, not an official schedule or confirmation from HBO.
