Detective Hwang Jun-ho is alive in Season 2. After discovering that his brother In-ho is the Front Man, Jun-ho is shot and falls from the island cliffs; Season 2 reveals that he survives and later awakens from a coma. The story confirms his recovery, but the available explanations do not establish exactly how he was rescued or the medical details of his survival.
What happened to Jun-ho at the end of Season 1?
Jun-ho infiltrates the games while searching for his missing brother. On the island, he discovers that In-ho is the Front Man. In-ho shoots him, and Jun-ho falls from the cliffs into the sea. The Korean Film Council’s synopsis describes the shooting and fall (Korean Film Council).
How does Season 2 explain that Jun-ho is alive?
Netflix’s official Season 2 preview directly poses the cliffhanger question—“Did Jun-ho survive?”—and says the new season answers whether he died and how he survived. Creator and director Hwang Dong-hyuk told Netflix Tudum: “You will get the answer to your burning question about whether Jun-ho died or made it out alive when he fell off that cliff” (Netflix Tudum Season 2 preview).
The clearest recovery detail comes from a contemporaneous Los Angeles Times review: Jun-ho awakens from a coma after the shooting and fall into the sea (Los Angeles Times review). Season 2 brings him back into the story as a detective still trying to find the island.

What Jun-ho does after recovering
Jun-ho joins Gi-hun’s effort to destroy the games and searches for the island from a boat with people he has hired. His investigation is hampered by Captain Park, who is secretly working against it. Netflix’s ending explainer reveals that Park kills a crew member after the man catches him tampering with a drone, then conceals what happened (Netflix Season 2 ending explainer).
Netflix’s character guide and preview portray Jun-ho as determined but isolated: he lacks evidence and does not have his captain’s support (Netflix character guide).

What the story does—and does not—explain
The established answer is that Jun-ho survives, recovers from a coma, and resumes the search. The cited accounts do not spell out a precise rescue sequence or a medical explanation for how he lived through the gunshot and fall. Details such as the bullet’s path, who physically rescued him, or exactly how he reached safety should not be treated as confirmed unless supported by what is shown directly in the episodes.
