House of the Dragon Season 2, Episode 5 Ending Explained: Rhaenyra and Jacaerys’ Plan

Jace’s idea could help the Blacks find riders for Vermithor and Silverwing, but House of the Dragon’s “Regent” ends before anyone claims a dragon.

At the end of “Regent,” Jacaerys proposes that Rhaenyra search Targaryen family histories for descendants who could try to claim the Blacks’ riderless dragons, Vermithor and Silverwing. It is a possible way to add strength against the Greens—not a plan that has already produced new dragonriders. The episode leaves the search, and the risks of it, unresolved.

What is Jacaerys’s plan?

Jace suggests looking through Targaryen family histories for descendants of people who married into other noble houses. The hope is that some of those descendants might have enough of a family connection to attempt to claim Vermithor or Silverwing, two powerful dragons currently without riders on the Blacks’ side.

Rhaenyra is initially skeptical, and the episode does not show anyone being recruited or accepted by a dragon. Jace has raised a possibility for her to consider, not revealed a sure route to more dragonriders.

Why does Jace negotiate with House Frey?

Before raising the dragon idea, Jace secretly travels to the Twins to seek House Frey’s fealty and passage for Rhaenyra’s armies. The agreement would help open a route for the northern force secured from Cregan Stark. The Freys want Harrenhal in exchange for cooperating, making the negotiation a political and military bargain as well as a test of Jace’s judgment.

His initiative is also personal. In a TV Guide interview published July 15, 2024, actor Harry Collett described Jace as wanting to prove himself to his mother after Luke’s death. Collett said: “For Jace, all he wants to do is prove his worth to his mother, and I feel like there is a bit of a role reversal going on this season where Jace is acting a bit like the parent and he is trying to tell his mum what to do.” That is Collett’s interpretation of the character, not dialogue from the episode.

Why are Vermithor and Silverwing important?

The Blacks have formidable dragons without riders, while the Greens can field Aemond and Vhagar. A dragon’s existence alone does not automatically add usable strength: the Blacks would need someone willing and able to attempt a claim, a dragon that accepts that person, and a rider whose loyalties can be trusted.

Strategic question What the episode establishes
Which side has powerful dragons without riders? The Blacks have Vermithor and Silverwing available without riders.
What advantage do the Greens have? Aemond rides Vhagar.
What would make Jace’s idea useful? A descendant would have to successfully claim a dragon and become a dependable ally; neither outcome is shown.

How much Targaryen blood do you need to ride a dragon?

The episode gives no numerical threshold. Jace’s proposal rests on finding descendants with Targaryen ancestry, but it does not establish that a particular amount of ancestry guarantees a dragon will accept someone. Family connection makes the search conceivable; it does not make a successful bond certain.

What does the ending leave unresolved?

  • Whether Rhaenyra will pursue Jace’s suggested search.
  • How many potential candidates, if any, the family histories might reveal.
  • Whether a candidate could claim Vermithor or Silverwing, and whether that person would remain loyal to the Blacks.

The episode’s final turn is therefore a strategic opening rather than a confirmed change in the balance of power. Jace has given Rhaenyra a way to think about the riderless dragons, but the story has not yet shown that the idea can work.
