Spoiler: Link survives the hospital explosion cliffhanger—but the cliffhanger belongs to the Season 21 finale, not Season 22. The Season 22 premiere follows the explosion’s aftermath, where Link is alive but facing a difficult recovery.
Did Link die in the Grey’s Anatomy explosion?
No. Atticus “Link” Lincoln, played by Chris Carmack, survives the hospital explosion. The danger was introduced in the Season 21 finale; Season 22 begins with the consequences, rather than with a new cliffhanger about whether Link lived. ABC’s cast listing identifies Carmack as Link.
When does the explosion storyline happen?
The season boundary is the source of the confusion. ABC lists Season 22’s first episode, “Only the Strong Survive,” as airing October 10, 2025. Its synopsis says: “After the catastrophic hospital explosion, Grey Sloan’s staff scrambles to save not only their patients’ lives but also their own.” In other words, the explosion is the setup from the Season 21 finale, and the premiere is the aftermath. ABC’s episode listing provides the synopsis and date.
What does Season 22 reveal about Link?
Link is alive, but not unharmed. In an interview about the Season 22 story, showrunner Meg Marinis said Link was “still very much not okay, with a long road to recovery ahead,” made more complicated by Jo being due to give birth soon. That is a confirmation of survival and a description of his ongoing recovery—not evidence that the Season 22 premiere created the original threat. Read Marinis’s interview with Shondaland.

Is this the same cliffhanger as Jo’s Season 22 crisis?
No. A later Season 22 cliffhanger focused on Jo and her twins, not Link’s explosion injuries. TheWrap’s January 8, 2026 report on episode 7 said the winter premiere ended with Jo opening her eyes after an emergency C-section, while the babies showed signs of improvement. That separate storyline can be easy to conflate with Link’s recovery because the two characters’ stories intersect, but it does not change when Link’s explosion cliffhanger occurred. What comes next?
As of October 8, 2026, ABC Press had listed “Collide” as the Season 23 premiere for October 15, 2026; that season had not yet premiered.
