There is no single official checklist of every Xenomorph “type” across the Alien films, crossovers, games, comics and novels. The clearest way to understand the creatures is to separate life-cycle stages from adult forms, host-shaped variations and related hybrids. This guide focuses on the films, then marks notable expanded-universe additions separately.
What counts as a Xenomorph “type”?
The word type is often used for unlike things: an egg, a juvenile, an adult caste, a creature altered by its host, or a related organism from a prequel. They are not all separate species. In particular, the egg, Facehugger, chestburster and adult are stages in a life cycle, not four adult varieties.
For the films, Drone, Warrior and Queen are useful labels for adult forms, but the movies do not establish one complete, unchanging set of caste rules. Host and story circumstances also affect appearance. Games, comics and novels add further named forms, so any claim to list “every” type needs to define which media it covers.
The basic Xenomorph life cycle
The familiar sequence is Ovomorph (egg) → Facehugger → developing embryo and chestburster → adult. The stages describe how the organism develops; they should not be counted as separate species or adult castes.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Ovomorph (egg): The reproductive container from which a Facehugger emerges.
- Facehugger: A parasitic delivery stage that attaches to a host and introduces the developing organism.
- Embryo and chestburster: The organism develops inside the host; “chestburster” refers to the juvenile as it emerges. It is a striking life-cycle stage, not a separate species.
- Adult: The resulting creature may be described as a Drone, Warrior, Queen or by a film-specific name, depending on its appearance and context.
Major Xenomorph forms in the films
This table distinguishes life-cycle stages from adult forms and unusual creatures. “Origin” describes the story context, not a settled biological classification.
| Form | Stage or role | Film and context | How to classify it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ovomorph | Egg stage | Alien and later films | Life-cycle stage |
| Facehugger | Host-infection stage | Alien and later films | Life-cycle stage |
| Chestburster | Emerging juvenile | Memorably depicted in Alien | Life-cycle stage |
| Drone or ordinary adult | Adult | The solitary adult in Alien is commonly called a Drone | Common adult-form label |
| Warrior | Adult hive fighter | The group of adults in Aliens | Common adult-form label |
| Queen | Large reproductive adult | Introduced in Aliens | Adult with a reproductive role |
| Runner, or Dog Alien | Adult with a quadrupedal body plan | Alien 3; its form is shaped by its host | Host-shaped adult |
| Newborn | Unique human-Xenomorph hybrid | Alien Resurrection; associated with cloning and genetic alteration | Hybrid, not a normal life-cycle stage |
| Deacon | Distinct creature from the prequel story | Prometheus; produced through a chain involving the Trilobite and an Engineer | Related or precursor-like; exact taxonomy is unsettled |
| Neomorph | Distinct creature associated with spore infection | Alien: Covenant | Related creature, not the traditional Xenomorph life cycle |
| Covenant adult, often called Protomorph or Praetomorph | Adult creature | Alien: Covenant | Film creature described in promotional material as a Xenomorph; alternate reference names vary |
| Romulus station Xenomorphs | Xenomorphs encountered aboard a station | Alien: Romulus | Film-specific setting and group, not a separately established species |
| Offspring | Human-like hybrid at the climax | Alien: Romulus | Distinct from the station’s Xenomorphs |
| Predalien | Predator-host hybrid | Alien vs. Predator crossover | Crossover hybrid, not a standard mainline-film caste |
How the adult forms differ
Drone and Warrior
“Drone” is a common label for the adult most associated with the original Alien. “Warrior” is commonly applied to the adult hive fighters shown in Aliens. The distinction helps describe the films’ portrayals, but should not be treated as a complete biological rulebook: the movies do not establish that every adult must fit one of these roles.

Queen
The Queen is the conspicuously large reproductive adult introduced in Aliens. Her egg-laying role makes her central to the film’s hive hierarchy. She is an adult form, not a later stage that every individual Xenomorph is shown to reach.
Runner, or Dog Alien
The quadrupedal adult in Alien 3 is commonly called the Runner or Dog Alien. Its body plan reflects its host, illustrating why an adult’s appearance can vary without requiring the conclusion that it is a wholly separate species.

Related creatures and hybrids are not interchangeable
Deacon and Neomorph
The Deacon appears at the end of Prometheus, following a distinct chain involving the Trilobite and an Engineer. It is best described as related or precursor-like to the familiar Xenomorph, rather than assigned a definitive place in a settled Xenomorph taxonomy. The Neomorph in Alien: Covenant is linked to infection by spores and is distinguished from the traditional Xenomorph. Both belong in a discussion of related creatures, not in the basic egg-to-adult sequence.
Newborn and Offspring
The Newborn in Alien Resurrection is a unique human-Xenomorph hybrid associated with cloning and genetic alteration. The Offspring in Alien: Romulus is likewise a human-like hybrid, and should not be confused with the Xenomorphs encountered aboard the station. Neither is a standard adult caste.

Predalien
The Predalien results from a Xenomorph embryo developing in a Predator and appears in the Alien vs. Predator crossover. It is a host-derived hybrid, not simply another name for a Warrior or Queen. The crossover also sits at the boundary of the franchise’s film continuities, so include it as a crossover form rather than silently folding it into a mainline-film taxonomy.

| Form | Role or description | Scope |
|---|---|---|
| Praetorian | A large guard form below the Queen in size | Recurring expanded-universe form; not established as a movie category |
| Empress | An additional high-level reproductive form | Games and comics; not shown or referenced in the movies |
| Queen Mother | An additional high-level form | Games and comics; not shown or referenced in the movies |
These labels can be useful when discussing the particular game or comic that uses them. They should not be presented as stages in the film life cycle or as a definitive screen canon.
A practical way to classify any “Alien” creature
- Is it part of development? Classify eggs, Facehuggers and chestbursters as life-cycle stages.
- Is it an adult role? Drone, Warrior and Queen are useful film-facing labels, with the limits described above.
- Is its body shaped by its host or story circumstances? The Runner is a host-shaped adult; the Newborn and Offspring are hybrids.
- Is it a distinct prequel creature or a crossover organism? Keep the Deacon, Neomorph and Predalien separate from the standard life cycle.
- Which medium establishes it? Mark forms from games and comics as expanded-universe additions rather than implying that every film uses the same taxonomy.
With those distinctions, the movie-first answer is manageable: a core life cycle, several commonly named adult forms, a handful of host-shaped or hybrid creatures, and separate related organisms. There is no meaningful single total for “every type” unless the films, crossover stories and expanded universe are all defined in advance.
