The sequel brings the generations together, yet its expanding cast and franchise lore can compete with those strengths.
Why the comparison is built into Frozen Empire
The film’s setup deliberately joins the generations. Sony’s official synopsis sends the Spengler family back to the New York firehouse, where they team up with the original Ghostbusters, now operating a research lab. An ancient artifact unleashes a threat that the combined group must face. Sony also identifies the film as based on the 1984 Ghostbusters. Sony Pictures’ official film page
That premise gives the returning team a role in the story, but the newer continuation is carried by the family connected to Egon Spengler. The Associated Press reported that Dan Aykroyd, Ernie Hudson, and Bill Murray returned in supporting roles. CBS’s cast feature identifies Mckenna Grace’s Phoebe as Egon’s granddaughter and describes the mix of original performers and newer cast members. In other words, the originals supply continuity while the Spenglers anchor the new generation. Associated Press opening-weekend report CBS News cast feature
What made the 1984 team feel so strong
A compact ensemble with a legible center
The original film’s appeal is closely tied to the feeling of a team whose members’ personalities are easy to distinguish and whose interactions form the comic engine. Frozen Empire has more people to serve: legacy Ghostbusters, the Spengler family, and additional characters. The AP review found the sequel overextended and crowded, a criticism that points to a structural difference rather than simply a shortage of familiar faces. When screen time is divided across a larger group, the original team’s concentrated chemistry is harder to reproduce.

- In Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire, the Spengler family returns to where it all started ? the iconic New York City firehouse ? to team up with the original Ghostbusters, who?ve developed a top-secret research lab. But when the discovery of an ancient artifact unleashes an evil force, Ghostbusters new and old must join forces to protect their home and save the world from a second Ice Age.
Comedy that shares the story with the ghosts
The AP reviewer considered Frozen Empire a significant improvement on Afterlife, particularly because it brought back comedy the reviewer felt had been missing. The same review still judged the movie below the 1984 original’s standard and described it as somewhat retread-like, with the scale of a high-production-value television pilot rather than a major theatrical event. Those are one critic’s judgments, not a universal audience verdict. They nevertheless make the distinction useful: restoring jokes helps, but the old film’s benchmark is not just the presence of humor—it is how naturally character, comic timing, and ghost-busting work together. Callbacks that serve characters, not just continuity
Returning faces can make a sequel feel connected to its past, but recognition is not the same as comic chemistry. Time’s analysis of Frozen Empire argued that additions to the franchise’s lore and fictional history leave less room for the comic experience of busting ghosts. Paired with the AP review’s crowded-ensemble concern, that suggests a practical test for the film’s nostalgia: a callback works best when it develops a character or creates a comic moment; it is less effective when explanation of the franchise takes over the scene. Does Frozen Empire make the original team look better?
It makes a persuasive case for the strengths of the original ensemble by contrast, but not by delivering an uncontested verdict. The sequel’s reunion shows how much narrative space it takes to balance old and new characters, while its lore-heavy ambitions can distract from the simple pleasure of watching a distinctive group react to supernatural trouble. The AP review also recognized improvements over Afterlife, including more comedy and notable moments for Mckenna Grace and Kumail Nanjiani. The comparison is therefore not “the new cast is bad”; it is that the first film’s focused comic group remains difficult to match when a sequel must carry a larger cast and a longer history.

Launch-week figures offer context about the film’s opening, not a final judgment on its quality or financial outcome. The Associated Press reported a $45.2 million domestic opening-weekend studio estimate for Frozen Empire, nearly the same as the $44 million opening it reported for Afterlife in 2021. The AP also reported a B+ CinemaScore for Frozen Empire and an A- for Afterlife. These are historical opening-period measures: the box-office amounts are opening estimates, and CinemaScore grades reflect audience polling rather than critics’ scores or proof of profitability. The AP said the film opened at No. 1 but cautioned that profitability was not assured; these figures do not establish a final worldwide gross or final profit.
Sony Pictures Japan reported an 85% Rotten Tomatoes audience score on March 25, 2024. That is a dated, studio-reported snapshot, not a current score or a substitute for a broader consensus. Sony Pictures Japan, March 25, 2024
