The film’s emotional story is less about Andy mastering the logistics of life with children than about recognizing the pattern behind his strained relationship with Grace. He has another chance to show up for a family, but that does not erase the years in which he failed to do so for her. The contrast between young children who need him now and an adult daughter who has reason to be wary gives the familiar midlife-crisis setup its sharper edge.
Does Keaton carry the emotional story?
Yes. Keaton makes Andy’s change feel like a series of awkward adjustments rather than a sudden conversion. His comic energy suits a man trying to improvise his way through school-age parenting, but the performance is most effective when the jokes stop covering for him. Andy can be charming and still have caused real hurt; Keaton lets both truths occupy the same character.

That balance is what gives the film its heart. Andy’s effort to repair things with Grace matters not because he is suddenly an ideal father, but because he has to face the difference between wanting to be a good one and having actually been there. The reconciliation has more weight when it is treated as work, not as a reward Andy automatically earns for becoming more involved with the twins.
How does the film balance comedy, sentiment, and family drama?
Goodrich leans into warmth and familiar family-comedy rhythms, then asks those rhythms to carry a more uncomfortable question: what does an adult child owe a parent who is only now trying to change? Its funniest material grows from Andy’s inexperience and disrupted routines. Its more sentimental scenes aim for reconciliation and emotional clarity.

That combination can feel a little too tidy. RogerEbert.com described the film as “schmaltzy but endearing,” a useful shorthand for its tug between unabashed sweetness and genuine affection. The sentiment is not a flaw in itself; the risk is that a warm finish can make repair seem easier than the history leading up to it. The film is strongest when the father-daughter relationship remains the point, rather than treating Andy’s new competence with the twins as proof that everything is settled.

In an Associated Press interview, Meyers-Shyer said her interest in complicated father-daughter relationships was informed by her own experience of her father remarrying and having a second set of children; she also said Keaton inspired the lead role. The AP reported that the production shot in Los Angeles over 25 days. Those details offer context for the film’s family dynamics and lead performance, rather than a guarantee that its choices will resonate equally for every viewer.
Discussing the editing process in a Directors Guild of America Q&A, Meyers-Shyer recalled: “I watched the first cut, which is probably one of the darkest times for a Director because it’s the slowest, unfunniest, and worst version of your film.” Her comment points to the shaping that happens between a script and a finished comedy, where timing and tone have to work together.

Rotten Tomatoes lists an October 18, 2024 wide theatrical release, a November 12, 2024 streaming release, and a runtime of 1 hour 51 minutes. Those are release-history details, not a statement of present availability.
Warner Bros. Discovery announced on January 22, 2025 that the film would make its global streaming debut exclusively on Max on January 31, followed by an HBO linear airing on February 1 at 8 p.m. ET. The announcement establishes the planned U.S.-focused release events at that time; it does not establish that the film remains in a service’s catalog today. Rialto Distribution’s Australia/New Zealand-facing listing describes it as “On digital now,” but that territory-specific listing likewise cannot confirm availability everywhere.
