David Sweat was captured in Constable, New York, on June 28, 2015, after a three-week manhunt. A State Police sergeant shot and wounded him when he failed to obey an order to halt. After recovering at Albany Medical Center, Sweat returned to prison, pleaded guilty to escape-related charges and received a 7-to-14-year sentence consecutive to the life-without-parole term he was already serving.
How David Sweat was captured
Sweat and fellow Clinton Correctional Facility escapee Richard Matt were discovered missing during the prison’s morning count on June 6, 2015. Matt was shot and killed during the manhunt on June 26. Two days later, a State Police sergeant shot and apprehended Sweat in Constable after he did not comply with an order to stop. The New York State Inspector General’s investigation details the escape and the security failures behind it: the Inspector General’s report.
What happened after he was caught?
Sweat was taken to Albany Medical Center for treatment. After recovering, he was transferred to Five Points Correctional Facility on July 5, 2015, according to a June 2025 Times Union retrospective. He then faced additional criminal proceedings for the escape and for possessing contraband in prison.
What sentence did David Sweat receive for the escape?
Sweat pleaded guilty to two counts of first-degree escape and one count of first-degree promoting prison contraband. In 2016, Clinton County Court sentenced him as a second felony offender to an aggregate term of 7 to 14 years. That term was ordered to run consecutively to his existing life-without-parole sentence, not instead of it. The Appellate Division, Third Department, affirmed the judgment on January 11, 2018. The appellate opinion records the pleas, sentence and appeal.

Where is David Sweat now?
The latest location in the sources cited here is Mid-State Correctional Facility. Times Union reported in June 2025, based on state records, that Sweat had been moved among at least five prisons since his capture and was then placed at Mid-State. That is a dated report, not confirmation of his location today.
For a current check, use the New York State incarcerated-individual lookup. The state says the lookup draws information from the Department of Corrections and Community Supervision (DOCCS) database when a request is made and is intended to show status and location across state correctional facilities.

What the investigation found about the escape
The Inspector General identified failures in basic security and oversight at Clinton Correctional Facility, including inadequate staff-bag searches, negligent or omitted night counts, weak cell searches, and deficient supervision and central management oversight. The report says Sweat worked in the tunnels for approximately 85 nights, during which more than 400 bed-check opportunities should have taken place; a properly conducted check could have revealed that he was missing. Investigators took sworn testimony from more than 170 witnesses and reviewed tens of thousands of pages.
The report also estimated approximately $23 million in New York State law-enforcement overtime for the search. That figure covers state overtime, not the total cost across federal, local, other-state or foreign agencies. The report separately cited $573,000 for prison repairs and additional security measures.
