Den of Thieves 3 was reported to be in active development at Lionsgate in January 2025, with Gerard Butler and O’Shea Jackson Jr. expected to return. That is a report of development plans—not confirmation that production has begun, the cast is finalized, or a release date has been set.
Is Den of Thieves 3 confirmed?
Lionsgate was reported to be moving a third Den of Thieves film into active development in a January 30, 2025 report by TheWrap. The report described plans for a sequel, but did not establish that it had entered production or that every deal had been finalized. Development status can change, and no newer studio announcement establishing a production start is identified here.
TheWrap also reported that Gerard Butler’s G-BASE banner and Tucker Tooley Entertainment would produce, and that Tucker Tooley Entertainment would jointly finance the film. Those details were reported plans in January 2025, not confirmation that financing or production arrangements have since closed.
Who is expected to return?
TheWrap reported that Gerard Butler and O’Shea Jackson Jr. were expected to reprise their roles as Nick O’Brien and Donnie Wilson. The report did not provide a complete cast list or say their contracts were finalized, so they should be described as expected returnees rather than confirmed cast members.
Who is writing and directing?
TheWrap reported that Lionsgate was in talks with Christian Gudegast to write and direct the third film. Gudegast wrote and directed Den of Thieves: Pantera, according to the official film page. His work on the previous film is established; his attachment to the sequel was reported as a negotiation, not a completed deal.

Where will the sequel take place?
Japan is not the setting, according to Jackson in an interview reported by AOL/ScreenRant on August 17, 2026. Jackson said his character “can’t go to the States anymore” and cannot go to Europe “because I just robbed the [World] Diamond Center.” He expressed interest in making a heist film in Japan, but the interview says the third film will not be set there. It does not reveal the actual location.
Other locations suggested in commentary remain speculation unless the filmmakers or studio announce one. Jackson’s comments do not establish a finished script or confirm that the story’s setting has been formally announced.
