Dragon Ball DAIMA is a Toriyama-authored adventure set in the Demon Realm, featuring Goku and companions made small by a conspiracy. That makes it a plausible spiritual successor to the original Dragon Ball’s travel-and-discovery approach—but it does not prove that DAIMA avoids a franchise-wide trope, or establish its exact place relative to every Dragon Ball Super arc.
Where does DAIMA fit in the Dragon Ball timeline?
The clearest answer is that DAIMA revisits the post-Buu cast, but the official material cited here does not give a precise in-universe date or settle its position against every Super storyline. Release order and story chronology are separate questions.

The official Dragon Ball series chronology records franchise release milestones: the manga began serialization in 1984, the original anime began in 1986, Dragon Ball Z in 1989, Dragon Ball GT in 1996, Dragon Ball Super in 2015, and Dragon Ball DAIMA in 2024. Those dates describe when works appeared, not the order of every event in their fictional histories.
For Super, Toei’s July 2015 announcement said the series “takes place right after the Dragon Ball Z Buu saga,” incorporating characters introduced in Battle of Gods and Resurrection ‘F’. That is an official description of Super’s premise; it does not, by itself, place DAIMA relative to every Super arc or continuity version. See Toei’s 2015 announcement.

DAIMA’s clues point back toward the Buu-era story. Its teaser was described as showing a mysterious figure watching Goku battle Majin Buu, while the series premise has Goku and his friends suddenly made small by a conspiracy. The official material then sends them toward the Great Demon Realm. These connections make the Buu story relevant context, but they are not a dated timeline statement.
What is DAIMA’s premise, and why does its setting matter?
Toei presents DAIMA as a new adventure in the Demon Realm. Goku and Supreme Kai are miniaturized and travel with Glorio and Panzy; the official Japanese synopsis describes the conspiracy, the search for its cause in the Great Demon Realm, and the encounter with the mysterious young Majin Glorio. The Toei announcement of September 4, 2024 outlines the setting and cast, while the official DAIMA site provides the Japanese synopsis and credits.

This premise supplies a solid basis for talking about exploration: the characters have a new realm to traverse and a mystery to pursue. That is a different emphasis from simply presenting a stronger opponent. It does not establish how much of the finished series is travel, comedy, or combat; those judgments require comparison with the episodes themselves.
Is DAIMA the original Dragon Ball’s “true successor”?
“True successor” works best as a critical argument, not an official label. The original Dragon Ball often combined fighting with travel, comic detours, and discovery. DAIMA’s Demon Realm adventure and conspiracy give it a premise that can be read through that lens. The resemblance is meaningful, but the official announcements do not declare DAIMA a return to the original series’ formula.
The headline’s “biggest trope” also needs definition. One useful candidate is the tendency for conflict to center on escalating power and increasingly formidable opponents. That is an interpretive comparison, not a trope identified or ranked by the official sources. To test whether DAIMA avoids it, a viewer would need to weigh the story’s mysteries, geography, comedy, and battles against one another across episodes—not infer the answer from the premise alone.
How the comparison can be made fairly
- Travel and discovery: Does moving through unfamiliar places drive the plot, or mainly connect one fight to the next?
- Comedy and combat: Do comic situations and character interactions carry substantial story weight alongside battles?
- Conflict and power: Are problems resolved chiefly by gaining strength and defeating a more powerful opponent, or do mystery and exploration shape the outcome?
These questions make “successor” a useful lens without turning it into a claim about consensus. The available official descriptions establish DAIMA’s adventure setting; they do not establish a franchise-wide verdict about its themes or how audiences have received it.

What DAIMA’s credits establish
DAIMA has a particularly direct connection to Akira Toriyama’s creative work. Toei described him as closely involved in the original work, story, character design, and additional designs for vehicles, monsters, and background characters. The official Japanese site credits him for original work, story, and character design. The first point appears in Toei’s initial DAIMA announcement; the site’s credits are listed at the official DAIMA website.
That authorship strengthens the case for treating DAIMA as a deliberate new adventure rather than just another release in the franchise chronology. It still does not settle how the series fits alongside each later continuity or prove that it rejects any particular storytelling pattern.

It is also worth keeping release history, story placement, and continuity claims distinct. The official chronology lists GT and DAIMA as franchise installments, but the chronology itself does not explain how their stories relate.
Bottom line on DAIMA’s place and legacy
DAIMA is a 2024 series with a Toriyama-authored Demon Realm adventure that reconnects Goku and his companions with the Buu-era cast. Its premise makes a persuasive case for comparing it with the original Dragon Ball’s spirit of exploration. But the official sources do not give a precise DAIMA-to-Super timeline or confirm that it avoids a defined franchise trope. Those remain questions for careful viewing, not settled facts.
