Dan Aykroyd missed SNL50: The Anniversary Celebration because he wanted to watch the live special at home with his family, from beginning to end. He later explained that if he had attended, he expected he would be in a dressing room working rather than watching as a fan. His absence was not publicly explained before the event, and available reporting does not establish that he was excluded or involved in a dispute.
Why wasn’t Dan Aykroyd at SNL 50?
Aykroyd gave his fuller explanation in an Entertainment Weekly interview published July 25, 2025, as reported by Us Weekly. He said he wanted to watch at home, rather than attend and end up working backstage.
“I wanted to be at home and I wanted to watch the show [from] beginning to end,” he said. “I knew if I was there, I’d be in a dressing room, I’d be working.” He also said he wanted to experience the show nostalgically with his family, “eating my own popcorn.” He described himself as a fan of the current show and praised its newer cast members.
What was known before the anniversary special?
The three-hour live special aired on Sunday, February 16, 2025. In its February 11 preview, the Associated Press said the reason for Aykroyd’s absence was unclear and reported that his publicist had not responded to a request for comment. The fuller explanation emerged months later in the July interview.

That post described how he watched and felt about the broadcast, but did not explain why he chose to stay home. NJ.com reported on the post.
Why his absence stood out
Aykroyd was one of the original Not Ready for Prime Time Players, appearing on Saturday Night Live from 1975 to 1979. He was the only living original cast member not to attend the anniversary special, according to Us Weekly. The AP’s preview identified the original seven as Chevy Chase, Gilda Radner, John Belushi, Laraine Newman, Aykroyd, Garrett Morris and Jane Curtin; Radner and Belushi had died before the special. The AP reported that Chase, Morris, Curtin and Newman were expected to attend.
His absence was also conspicuous because viewers associate Aykroyd with recurring sketches and characters including the Blues Brothers, the Coneheads and Super Bass-O-Matic. He had attended earlier anniversary celebrations: the 15th-season event in 1989, the 25th anniversary in 1999 and the 40th anniversary in 2015.
Was Aykroyd left out or in a feud with SNL?
The available reporting does not establish that Aykroyd was excluded, uninvited or in a feud with the show. His own later explanation was that he preferred to watch at home with his family. There is likewise no basis in the cited accounts to attribute his absence to health or scheduling.

Was SNL 50 “not the same” without him?
That is an opinion, not a measured audience finding. Aykroyd’s role in the original cast, his best-known recurring sketches and his presence at earlier anniversaries help explain why some viewers noticed he was missing. The available coverage does not provide audience polling showing that viewers generally thought the special was worse without him.
