Fanning plays Lucy in this early-career drama, a clear landmark for viewers interested in the role that brought her awards attention as a child performer. Start here for an intimate dramatic performance rather than a blockbuster-scale showcase.

War of the Worlds (2005)
Steven Spielberg’s large-scale science-fiction film is another prominent child-era performance. Choose it for spectacle and sustained suspense, and to see Fanning in a very different register from I Am Sam.
-
Charlotte’s Web (2006)
This family film brings a gentler tone to the list. It is the most straightforward choice for a shared watch or for viewers looking for Fanning in a warm, accessible story.
Rank #2
-
The Secret Life of Bees (2008)
Set in the American South in the 1960s, this ensemble period drama offers a bridge from Fanning’s high-profile child roles toward more layered dramatic material. Pick it for character relationships and period atmosphere.

The Alienist (2018)
In this period crime series, Fanning takes on a longer-form television role. Choose it if you want a historical investigation and more time with a character than a feature film allows.
-
Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood (2019)
Quentin Tarantino’s Hollywood-set film is a notable later-career credit. It is a natural pick for viewers curious about Fanning’s adult-era screen work in a sprawling ensemble movie.
Rank #4
-
The First Lady (2022)
This anthology-style political-history series adds another television option, with a different setting and subject from the crime story in The Alienist. Choose it for historical drama told through a limited-series format.
-
Ripley (2024)
Fanning’s recent television work is represented here by this series, which also has awards-body recognition: the Television Academy lists her in its Emmy profile, and the Golden Globes records a nomination for the work on her profile. It is a good choice if you want a recent series rather than an early-career film.

Where to start
If you want one pick from each of three different phases, start with I Am Sam for an early-career landmark, War of the Worlds for large-scale genre filmmaking, and Ripley for recent television and awards recognition. That is a viewing recommendation, not a claim that any one title is definitively her best.
How to choose among them
- For an early-career drama: I Am Sam.
- For action or science fiction: Man on Fire or War of the Worlds.
- For family viewing: Charlotte’s Web.
- For independent music drama: The Runaways.
- For a longer television story: The Alienist, The First Lady or Ripley.
- For an adult-era film credit: Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood.
Why there is no definitive top ten
There is no official ranking that establishes these as Dakota Fanning’s objectively best screen appearances. The list is curated for variety across film and television, genres and career periods, with credits corroborated by sources including the Warner Bros. Discovery Pressroom and her Golden Globes profile. Awards records can flag notable recognition, but they do not settle an artistic ranking.
That range also reflects how Fanning has described her later career. In an Associated Press interview published June 6, 2024, while promoting The Watchers, she said: “At this point in my life, I feel very settled in like who I am and what I want and what I don’t want and what I like and what I don’t like,” the AP reported. The remark offers context for her choices, not a formula for ranking them.
