Odysseus and Calypso share a scene
NBCUniversal’s May 7, 2026 announcement identifies an exchange between Damon’s Odysseus and Theron’s Calypso. It puts a personal relationship beat alongside the film’s larger war imagery, but the announcement does not provide dialogue or explain how the scene fits into the story.

The Trojan Horse is presented at epic scale
The announcement also describes a Trojan Horse sequence depicting “thousands of soldiers” and practical effects. That is the studio’s description of the sequence’s scale, not an independently audited count of performers or production personnel.
What story the film is adapting
Universal describes The Odyssey as an adaptation of Homer’s foundational saga. Dolby’s film synopsis frames its central premise as Odysseus’s dangerous journey home to Ithaca after the Trojan War, with encounters including Polyphemus, the Sirens and Calypso. Those are elements of the film’s broader premise; their inclusion in the synopsis does not confirm that each appears in this particular trailer.

The contrast between a scene involving Calypso and the Trojan Horse image points to two kinds of material the adaptation is promoting: the relationships and ordeals of Odysseus’s journey, and the scale of the war behind it. How large is the film’s production?
NBCUniversal describes the film as a mythic action epic shot across multiple international locations and calls it the first film shot entirely with IMAX cameras. That first-film distinction is the studio’s claim. Universal Canada similarly promotes the film as bringing Homer’s saga to IMAX screens with new IMAX film technology. Together, those statements establish the production’s advertised geographic and photographic scale, not additional plot details.
When does The Odyssey open?
Universal lists The Odyssey for July 17, 2026, and NBCUniversal says it will open in IMAX theaters worldwide on that date. The date is the distributor’s announced release schedule.

What the trailer does not confirm
- Which, if any, of the encounters named in the broader synopsis—such as Polyphemus or the Sirens—appear in this trailer.
- The character identities of Robert Pattinson, Lupita Nyong’o and Zendaya.
- Dialogue, the order of shots, or how the Odysseus–Calypso scene advances the plot.
- How the adaptation handles the poem’s ending or the fates of its characters.
Nolan has described the story’s cultural reach in a statement quoted by NBCUniversal: “It’s not a story—it’s the story.” The trailer announcement supports a reading of the film as both an intimate journey and a large-scale mythic epic, but it does not yet answer the adaptation questions above.
