Christian Bale’s Frankenstein has a visibly battered look in the first images released from Maggie Gyllenhaal’s The Bride!: staples mark his head and chest, his nose is distorted, and a tattoo across his chest reads “Hope.” The images, published on April 4, 2024, were described as camera tests—not a definitive guide to every detail in the finished film.
What Christian Bale looks like as Frankenstein
The black-and-white first-look image shows Bale with visible staples on his head and chest, a distorted nose and the word “Hope” tattooed across his chest. The early image coverage refers to his character as Frank, while the film’s official premise identifies him as Frankenstein. Entertainment Tonight’s April 4, 2024 report described the published image, and ComingSoon reported that director Maggie Gyllenhaal shared camera-test images of Bale and Jessie Buckley.
Jessie Buckley’s Bride appears alongside him
Buckley’s color image gives the Bride a contrasting look: short platinum-blonde waves, black lipstick and dark marks extending from her mouth toward her cheek, as described in Entertainment Tonight’s first-look coverage. The paired portraits preview the two central characters, but they should be read as early camera-test imagery rather than confirmation that every styling choice appears unchanged in the completed movie.
What The Bride! is about
In the film’s official premise, a lonely Frankenstein travels to 1930s Chicago and asks Dr. Euphronius to help create a companion. The official film site identifies Gyllenhaal as the filmmaker and Warner Bros. as worldwide distributor. Warner Bros.’ announcement lists Buckley and Bale among the stars, alongside Annette Bening, Jake Gyllenhaal and Penélope Cruz. The Warner Bros. Discovery Pressroom announcement gives the cast and U.S. streaming details.

How Gyllenhaal’s Bride differs from the 1935 film
The Bride! reimagines the story rather than simply reproducing the 1935 film Bride of Frankenstein. The Associated Press notes that Elsa Lanchester’s Bride in the earlier movie appears briefly and does not speak; in Gyllenhaal’s version, Buckley’s revived young woman has a leading, speaking role, and her actions drive the story. That shift makes the Bride more than a visual counterpart to Frankenstein: she becomes a central character in her own right. The Associated Press feature discusses the film’s reinterpretation and its place in that history.
