Andy Serkis’ animated Animal Farm has already opened in US and Canadian theaters, and Angel’s September 28, 2026 FAQ says Angel Guild members can now stream it. The adaptation brings George Orwell’s 1945 political novella to the screen as a satirical allegory about a struggle for equality that gives way to authoritarian rule. The book was banned in specific places—not everywhere—and the film’s availability outside Angel Guild streaming depends on region.
What is the new Andy Serkis Animal Farm movie about?
Angel describes the film as a satirical allegory in which animals rise up in pursuit of equality, but the pigs who take power gradually erase truth and suppress dissent. That is the distributor’s framing of a story rooted in Orwell’s critique of the Soviet regime; it should not be mistaken for a claim that every detail of the adaptation matches the novella.
Andy Serkis directed the animated feature, with a screenplay by Nicholas Stoller. Angel’s December 2025 announcement credits Aniventure and Imaginarium Productions as the production companies and Cinesite with animation. The film premiered at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival on June 9, 2025, before its North American theatrical release.
Voice cast
Angel’s current film page credits Seth Rogen as Napoleon, Gaten Matarazzo as Lucky, Steve Buscemi as Mr. Whymper, Glenn Close as Freida Pilkington, Laverne Cox as Snowball, Kieran Culkin as Squealer, Woody Harrelson as Boxer, Jim Parsons as Carl and the sheep flock, Andy Serkis as Mr. Jones, Randolph the Rooster and Old Major, Kathleen Turner as Benjamin, and Iman Vellani as Puff and Tammy.

Is Animal Farm a banned book?
Yes, in particular places and periods—but not as a universal or current worldwide ban. The Orwell Foundation says the novella was banned in the Eastern bloc and records a past ban in Burma. These examples support describing it as a book that was banned in specific countries or political settings, not claiming it remains illegal everywhere.
Orwell wrote the novella in 1943–44, and it was published in 1945 after several publishers rejected it. His proposed preface, reproduced by the Orwell Foundation, says four publishers refused the manuscript. One initially accepted it, then consulted the Ministry of Information and withdrew. Orwell presented that episode as an example of pressure on publishers, while distinguishing indirect pressure from direct government interference and an official ban.

That distinction matters: the publication history involved rejection and political pressure, while the documented bans refer to particular territories. The book’s 1945 publication makes it 81 years old in 2026; “80-year-old” is an approximate description used around the film’s 2025–26 news cycle.

You do not need to read the book to understand the film’s basic premise, but Orwell’s novella offers the original allegory in a compact form and makes it easier to compare the adaptation’s choices with the source. The available information does not establish a particular edition as preferable.
