Spoilers for Episode 7 and the series finale. The big reveal in “Death’s Hand in Mine” is that Rio Vidal is Death. The episode’s scrambled chronology follows tarot reader Lilia Calderu’s experience of time, while the finale later confirms that Billy Maximoff created the Witches’ Road and ends with ghost Agatha becoming his guide.
Who is Rio Vidal, and what is Episode 7’s big twist?
Rio Vidal is Death. Episode 7 reveals her identity during Lilia’s tarot trial, using the Death card and the comics’ “Lady Death” as part of the framing. Showrunner Jac Schaeffer said the reveal was intended to evoke those ideas, but the episode’s emotional center is Lilia’s acceptance of her own path—not a simple battle against an evil embodiment of death.
Schaeffer put the episode’s clue-making plainly in a TheWrap interview published October 25, 2024: “I think everything in this episode is of consequence, is what I would say.”
Why is Episode 7 out of order?
The chronology reflects Lilia’s unusual perception of time. She has experienced moments out of sequence since childhood, and much of her life has been shaped by fear of the deaths she foresees. The episode arranges its fragments around those “bops,” so moments that initially seem disconnected acquire meaning as Lilia reaches the tower sequence and accepts what is happening.

Schaeffer said the nonlinear structure was an early idea. She worked with writers Cam Squires and Gia King to solve the chronology, with the production using a living document to track transitions between Lilia’s time jumps. She cited Everything Everywhere All at Once, Memento, Arrival, and Lost among the nonlinear works that informed the team.
How the tarot and tower sequence were made
The production created its own tarot spread while aiming to stay faithful to the cards’ meanings. The Death reveal sits inside that visual system, but the cards also help tell Lilia’s story: the structure brings her scattered experiences together rather than treating them as random confusion.

The tower’s falling swords were physical props suspended on wires. As Schaeffer told TheWrap, “Those swords were real, they were on wires and they had to be plotted.” The crew mapped their positions before rehearsal. Patti LuPone was filmed on wires for the fall, and the tower and actor plates were composited using existing visual assets.
What the finale reveals about the Witches’ Road
The finale reveals that Billy Maximoff created the Witches’ Road. Schaeffer explained that the road’s practical sets reflect Billy’s limitations: he could produce a backdrop, forced perspective, and models, rather than a vast, fully realized forest. Rio cutting the road’s backdrop signals that she knows Billy made the hex.

The sound design reinforces the reveal. According to Schaeffer in TheWrap’s finale interview, the soundscape becomes more looped and artificial as Billy grows frustrated and members of the coven die. The road’s imperfections are therefore clues to its creator, not merely a production shortcut.
What Agatha’s ending means—and what it does not confirm
Agatha ends the series as a ghost and Billy’s spirit guide. Schaeffer said that ending was planned early. The finale’s kiss between Agatha and Rio culminates their love affair and triggers Agatha’s power, in Schaeffer’s account. The show treats Death as part of a flow between life and death, rather than simply as destruction.

The final pairing leaves room for more story, but Schaeffer did not confirm a second season. In the finale interview, she said she was excited as a fan by “this duo of Billy Maximoff and his spirit guide, Ghost Agatha,” while noting that handoffs between Marvel properties complicated what she could say. That is enthusiasm about the characters’ future, not an announcement of another season.

Episode 7 connects Lilia’s acceptance of death with the series’ broader treatment of mortality. Its nonlinear form makes her past and present feel entangled; the finale then clarifies the artificial world Billy made and leaves Agatha in a new role beside him. The connection is thematic as well as plot-driven: Schaeffer described Death as part of a cycle, while the ending gives a dead character a continuing purpose as a guide.
