For a rewatch focused on the story’s in-universe timeline, start with Prometheus. Hulu’s guide, revised August 13, 2025, recommends release order for newcomers; both orders are listed below.
Alien movies in release order
This is the order in which the seven films were released in theaters. It preserves the franchise’s original sequence of reveals and shifts in tone, making it the clearest route for a first-time viewer.
- Alien (1979)
- Aliens (1986)
- Alien 3 (1992)
- Alien: Resurrection (1997)
- Prometheus (2012)
- Alien: Covenant (2017)
- Alien: Romulus (2024)
Hulu recommends this sequence for first-time viewers, and Rotten Tomatoes’ guide, updated December 15, 2025, lists the same release order.
Alien movies in chronological order
The years below are in-universe story settings, not release years. Rotten Tomatoes and Hulu provide the timeline context; Alien: 3 follows Aliens directly in 2179.

- 6 Film Colelction
- Region Free
- Prometheus — 2089
- Alien: Covenant — 2104
- Alien — 2122
- Alien: Romulus — 2142
- Aliens — 2179
- Alien 3 — 2179, directly after Aliens
- Alien: Resurrection — 2379, about 200 years later
Prometheus and Alien: Covenant are prequels in the story timeline, even though they were the fifth and sixth films released. Romulus takes place between Alien and Aliens, not at the end of the chronology.
Which viewing order should you choose?
- First watch: Choose release order to encounter the films as audiences originally did.
- Timeline-focused rewatch: Choose chronological order to follow the fictional events from 2089 onward.
Neither order is mandatory; they serve different purposes. Starting chronologically means beginning with the prequels rather than the original 1979 film.

Should you include Alien: Earth or the crossover films?
Alien: Earth is a TV series, not a film
Hulu’s 2025 timeline places Alien: Earth in 2120, between Alien: Covenant and Alien. Add it only if you want to include the television series in a chronological watch; it does not change the seven-film list.
Alien vs. Predator films are an optional crossover branch
The seven-film list above covers the Alien series. Hulu counts nine movies when it adds the crossover films Alien vs. Predator (2004) and Aliens vs. Predator: Requiem (2007). Keep those separate when following the core seven-film release or story order.

Streaming availability can change and may vary by territory, so check your local service listings. The studio’s official Alien: Romulus page also lists Blu-ray and digital availability; that statement applies to Romulus, not a complete franchise collection.
