Spoilers for the full Season 2 finale. Arisu clears the Queen of Hearts game not by beating Mira at croquet, but by finishing without quitting. After the Face Cards fall, most survivors choose to return to the real world, where they wake in a hospital following a meteor disaster in Tokyo. They have no conscious memory of the Borderland. The Joker card in the final shot is deliberately unresolved in Season 2; it is not proof that the hospital is another game.
How does Arisu beat the Queen of Hearts?
Mira makes the Queen of Hearts challenge a psychological test as much as a game. It consists of three rounds of croquet, but her real tactic is to make Arisu doubt that the Borderland—and the people he cares about there—are real. She offers him competing explanations designed to shake his resolve.

Usagi cuts herself, forcing Arisu to confront the immediate reality of her pain. He regains his resolve and completes the game rather than quitting. Netflix’s Season 2 ending explainer makes an important distinction: Mira wins the croquet match itself, but Arisu clears the game because he finishes without forfeiting. Winning the sport and clearing the Queen’s challenge are not the same thing.
The scene gives the season’s climax an answer to Arisu’s search for certainty: he has to choose to keep going without first receiving a definitive explanation of the Borderland. His bond with Usagi and his decision to live carry the moment. That is a thematic reading of the scene, not a confirmed rule about how the Borderland works.

What does the meteor reveal mean?
After the Face Cards are defeated, the surviving players are offered a choice: remain in the Borderland as citizens or return to their world. Most decline citizenship. The story then shows them waking in a hospital after a meteor disaster struck Tokyo.
Netflix’s recap describes the disaster as destroying a large part of Tokyo and the Borderland as a kind of purgatory. In the show’s framing, the players are caught at the boundary between death and survival while their bodies are treated in the aftermath of the catastrophe. The finale does not present their shared experiences as a simple dream: the survivors return without conscious memories of them, but the series treats what happened in the Borderland as consequential.
Where do the characters end up?
- Arisu and Usagi: Both return to the real world. They meet at the hospital as strangers, with no conscious memory of their time together in the Borderland. Their encounter leaves open the possibility of a connection; it does not show them remembering or immediately resuming their relationship.
- Chishiya: Netflix says he chooses to return after being badly injured. He wakes in hospital beside Niragi and resolves to live more selflessly.
- Most other surviving players: They decline citizenship and wake in the hospital after returning.
- Banda and Yaba: They accept citizenship and remain in the Borderland, according to Netflix’s finale recap.
What does the Joker card mean?
The final image shows playing cards scattered outside. The wind carries them away except for the Joker. Season 2 does not explain the card’s precise meaning. Netflix’s ending explainer says “it’s unclear exactly what this means in the universe of Alice in Borderland the series.” The image can be read as leaving a boundary or transition hanging after the apparent return to ordinary life, or as a hint of more story to come—but neither reading is confirmed by that finale.
In particular, the Joker shot does not establish that the hospital is a false reality, that the survivors remain trapped, or that the Joker is a new game master. Season 2 ends with the survivors’ return and the card’s meaning unresolved.

What later Season 3 material adds
Netflix’s current series guide says Arisu and Usagi have returned to the real world after Season 2, and that Season 3 brings Arisu back to the Borderland after Usagi is pulled there. It describes the Joker as the only card still uncleared. That later context confirms the image connects to further story material; it does not mean Season 2 had already explained the Joker.
Is the Borderland real, or were the players dead?
The finale frames the Borderland as a liminal realm for people caught between life and death after the Tokyo meteor disaster. The players who return wake in hospital, which indicates that they survived the interval. The series does not reduce their experiences to an ordinary dream, but it also leaves the realm’s mechanics and the Joker’s exact role open to interpretation at the end of Season 2.
Rank #4
Did Arisu and Usagi remember each other?
No. They meet at the hospital as strangers because the returning survivors do not retain conscious memories of their time in the Borderland. Their meeting suggests a possible future connection, not an immediate recovery of their shared memories.

Netflix identifies the live-action series as an adaptation of Haro Aso’s manga, published by Shogakukan. The television finale should be read on its own terms: Netflix calls the Joker’s meaning in the series unclear. TV Guide’s January 3, 2023 ending article discusses the manga ending separately and offers one possible reading of the show’s final Joker image. Those are distinct interpretations; the manga’s ending should not be treated as a definitive explanation of the TV series’ final shot.
