In the story, Sean’s crew fits it with a Nissan Skyline GT-R engine. The real production cars were not all built that way: Edmunds reported that five of the six Mustangs had American V8s, while its tested Nissan-powered example used a turbocharged 2.6-liter Nissan straight-six.
What Mustang does Sean drive in Tokyo Drift?
It is a 1967 Ford Mustang Fastback, a classic American muscle car recast as a drift car. The film’s plot gives the car a Skyline GT-R engine, linking Sean’s Mustang to the Japanese performance-car world central to the movie. That fictional setup should not be confused with the production fleet: the cars made for filming had more than one engine configuration.
What engine did the film cars actually have?
The Nissan-powered Mustang
Edmunds tested a Nissan-powered 1967 Mustang fastback equipped with a turbocharged 2.6-liter, DOHC, 24-valve Nissan Skyline GT-R straight-six. The custom build used a single-turbo system rather than the Skyline engine’s stock twin-turbo arrangement, which Edmunds says conflicted with the Mustang’s steering column. The engine retained its original five-speed manual transmission. Edmunds’ test and feature on the Nissan-powered car describes this specific example; it does not establish that every Mustang used on set had the same powertrain.
The V8 drift cars
Edmunds reported that five of the six production Mustangs used American V8s. In its feature on the V8 cars, it describes 430-cubic-inch Ford Windsor V8s paired with four-speed Toploader manual transmissions. These were custom drift builds, not the Nissan-swapped version from the movie’s story. Edmunds’ V8 Mustang feature also notes that the intercoolers and large exhaust tips on those cars were cosmetic: exhaust passed through Magnaflow mufflers ahead of the rear axle.

| Configuration | Engine and turbo setup | Transmission | Published test results |
|---|---|---|---|
| Nissan-powered Mustang tested by Edmunds | Turbocharged 2.6-liter Nissan Skyline GT-R straight-six; custom single-turbo system | Original five-speed manual | 340 hp at 7,300 rpm and 264 lb-ft at 5,950 rpm at the rear wheels; 0–60 mph in 5.4 seconds; quarter mile in 13.5 seconds at 109.8 mph |
| V8 drift Mustang tested by Edmunds | 430-cubic-inch Ford Windsor V8 | Four-speed Toploader manual | 0–60 mph in 6.7 seconds; quarter mile in 14.7 seconds at 96.7 mph |
These figures are Edmunds’ results for the particular surviving cars it tested, not factory specifications or a claim that every car used for production performed identically. The Nissan car’s horsepower figure is measured at the rear wheels; it should not be compared directly with an engine’s rated output without accounting for measurement method.
What was shared across the custom builds?
Edmunds reports that the featured cars shared Global West suspension components and rack-and-pinion steering. It lists Toyo Proxes T1R tires—245/35R19 at the front and 275/35R19 at the rear—and Volk Racing Grey GT-7 wheels on the cars it tested or featured. These details help explain why the movie Mustang should be understood as a purpose-built film car rather than an untouched 1967 road car.

How does it differ from a regular 1967 Mustang Fastback?
A 2023 De Agostini/Fanhome franchise publication gives a conventional 1967 Mustang Fastback reference specification of a 6.4-liter Thunderbird Special V8 producing 320 hp SAE at 3,200 rpm, with front-engine, rear-wheel drive and a three-speed automatic. That specification is useful as a period-car comparison, but it does not describe the modified V8 drift cars or the Nissan-powered Mustang. The film builds had different engines, transmissions and custom chassis components.
