Daniel Day-Lewis’s most striking role preparations involved practical skills, physical practice and close attention to a character’s world. But “extreme method acting” is a headline shorthand, not a system he says he follows: discussing My Left Foot, he said, “I don’t follow the Method.” Here are ten reported episodes, with the distinction between documented preparation and later set lore kept clear.
What “method acting” means in these stories
Day-Lewis has resisted the idea that he works according to one prescribed acting system. In a Turner Classic Movies account of My Left Foot, he is quoted saying he is suspicious of systems and was trying to understand the role’s physical challenges. He has also said that taking time over preparation pleases him, and that the process should be joyful. The examples below are therefore best read as reported, role-specific choices—not proof that he literally became each character or followed a single method.
Ten reported examples of how Daniel Day-Lewis prepared for roles
1. My Left Foot: staying in the wheelchair and maintaining Christy Brown’s speech
Turner Classic Movies reports that Day-Lewis remained in a wheelchair throughout filming, including when cameras were not rolling, and maintained Brown’s strained speech. The account quotes him explaining that he was trying to come to terms with the physical problems of playing a disabled person, while explicitly rejecting the label of a Method actor. These details describe his approach on this production; they should not be taken as a general claim about how he worked on every film.
2. My Left Foot: spending weeks at the clinic Brown attended
A 1989 Washington Post interview reports that Day-Lewis spent weeks preparing at the Irish clinic where Brown had received therapy. He recalled feeling overwhelmed on his first day: “I wanted to leave, the first day I arrived there.” In the same interview, he describes shifting his attention to the children at the clinic—their joy and determination to do what they could.

3. My Left Foot: learning to paint and write with his left foot
The Washington Post reports that Day-Lewis learned to paint with his left foot and made some of the works seen in the film. A 2025 British Film Institute retrospective also describes him developing writing and painting through his left foot. This was practical work tied to depicting Brown’s abilities, not simply a visual flourish.
4. The Last of the Mohicans: practicing wilderness skills
For Michael Mann’s frontier drama, reports describe preparation that extended into the outdoors. The Guardian says Day-Lewis lived rough in the forest before filming. CBS News reports that he learned to handle a musket and tomahawk. These are distinct reported details of environmental and practical preparation, rather than evidence that every activity shown on screen was performed without assistance.

5. Gangs of New York: learning butcher work and knife throwing
CBS News reports that Day-Lewis worked at a butcher shop and learned to throw knives for his role as Bill “The Butcher” Cutting. W Magazine adds that he learned to throw cumbersome knives accurately. The Guardian also reported that Day-Lewis contracted pneumonia during production; that illness was an event during filming, not a preparation choice, and should not be recast as proof of a particular acting technique.
6. The Boxer: training for months as a fighter
CBS News reports that Day-Lewis trained for months as a fighter for the 1997 film. The available account supports that duration and focus, but not a more specific claim about a competitive bout or additional training milestones.

7. The Ballad of Jack and Rose: building a kitchen table
W Magazine reports that Day-Lewis built a kitchen table for his role as an off-grid iconoclast in this 2005 film. It is a small but concrete example of making an element of the character’s surroundings rather than relying only on dialogue or costume to suggest a way of life.
8. There Will Be Blood: working on an oil-well setup
W Magazine says Day-Lewis “practically rigged a turn-of-the-century oil well” for the film. That is the source’s characterization of his practical involvement; it does not establish that he built a complete, functioning historical oil field.

9. Phantom Thread: studying couture and choosing Woodcock’s details
For the 2017 fashion-house drama, W Magazine reports that Day-Lewis learned the couturier’s trade and selected specific fabrics, socks, shoes and personal objects for Reynolds Woodcock. He described the attention he gave those choices this way: “I gave so much thought to every single detail. I was probably infuriating.” The account presents a detailed study of a character’s professional and personal world, not a claim that Day-Lewis became a professional tailor.
10. Lincoln: separating preparation from a famous set story
The Lincoln anecdotes illustrate why reported method-acting stories need careful attribution. Time Out’s interview addresses the claim that Day-Lewis required others to call him “Mr. President”: according to the account, director Steven Spielberg suggested that form of address. It is not evidence of a demand by Day-Lewis, and the sources cited here do not establish a similarly detailed set of additional Lincoln preparation stories. The distinction matters: a memorable tale about a production is not automatically an example of an actor’s chosen preparation.

What the stories do—and do not—show
Taken together, these accounts describe several kinds of preparation: physical practice and speech work for My Left Foot; outdoor and hands-on skills for The Last of the Mohicans and Gangs of New York; months of fighter training for The Boxer; and the construction of a character’s material world in The Ballad of Jack and Rose, There Will Be Blood and Phantom Thread. Their evidentiary strength varies because the details come from different interviews and retrospective accounts. They support a picture of unusually thorough, role-specific work, not a universal practice or a reliable ranking of which performance was “most extreme.”
Day-Lewis has pushed back against the notion that this work is self-punishment. In a 2025 Associated Press interview, he said, “I don’t do it as an act of self-flagellation.” At a 2025 BFI Screen Talk, he put the positive side plainly: “The process needs to be a joyful thing.” His return in Anemone in 2025 also means Phantom Thread is no longer accurately described as his final film.
