The favor leads to Hephaestus, a perilous Tunnel of Love ride, and Percy choosing to take a trap meant for Annabeth.
What happens in “A God Buys Us Cheeseburgers”?
Disney identifies this as episode 105, and describes its premise as the quest deepening when Percy, Annabeth, and Grover are tasked with a favor by a fearsome opponent (Disney Plus Press). The episode’s opponent is Ares, played by Adam Copeland. Apple TV’s US catalog lists the episode as season 1, episode 5, with a January 10, 2024 release date, a 38-minute runtime, and a TV-PG rating; catalog details and availability may differ by region (Apple TV).
1. The trio’s journey grows more precarious
After the disaster at the St. Louis Arch, Percy, Annabeth, and Grover are fugitives, making ordinary travel harder as public suspicion and law enforcement close in. They are also racing the summer-solstice deadline to return Zeus’s master bolt. That pressure makes Ares’s offer more than a detour: it is a chance to move toward their goal when the trio has few easy options.
2. Ares offers help in exchange for a favor
Ares offers the demigods a route toward their objective if they recover his shield from an amusement park. Disney’s brief synopsis calls the opponent only “fearsome”; TV Insider’s episode coverage identifies him as Ares and details the bargain (TV Insider).

3. Grover stays with Ares
Percy and Annabeth agree to retrieve the shield, while Grover remains with Ares as collateral. The separation gives Grover a different role in the episode: using his social instincts to draw information from the god. It is also a change from the novel’s version of the trip, where Grover does not remain behind with Ares, according to TV Insider’s comparison.
4. Annabeth connects the park to Hephaestus
At the amusement park, Annabeth realizes that it is connected to Hephaestus, the god of craftsmanship. The series brings Hephaestus, played by Timothy Omundson, into direct contact with the questing demigods. TV Insider notes that this is an adaptation change: Hephaestus does not meet them in person in The Lightning Thief.

5. The Tunnel of Love turns myth into a dangerous ride
The Tunnel of Love ride presents Hephaestus’s difficult origin story, including rejection and injury that left him disabled. This is the episode’s telling of the myth, staged as part of the action rather than offered as a detached explanation. Percy and Annabeth have to make their way through the ride while its story becomes an immediate danger.
6. Ares’s shield is tied to a divine relationship conflict
The episode reveals that Hephaestus’s golden throne trap and Ares’s secret meeting with Aphrodite at the park are connected to the missing shield. Freeing it requires one of the demigods to take the throne’s danger. The shield mission therefore becomes more than a straightforward retrieval: the trio is caught in a conflict among the gods.

7. Percy takes Annabeth’s place in the trap
Percy uses his growing water abilities to save Annabeth in the tunnel. When the throne’s trap still has to be faced, he takes her place rather than leave her in danger. Annabeth appeals to Hephaestus, and his decision to intervene gives the adaptation a direct encounter between the god and the demigods—one absent from the novel’s version of the scene.
How the episode changes The Lightning Thief
The episode keeps the core shield-retrieval problem but reshapes who takes part and how the gods enter the story. These are adaptation choices, not a claim that one version is better than the other.

Riordan also described Hephaestus as a god who sees through Olympus’s appearance and sympathizes with demigods: “Even in the few moments, he does interact with our youngsters in a way that tells you that maybe this is one of the gods who actually gets it, who sees all of the silliness of Olympus, sees past it, and knows that it’s an illusion and sympathizes with the demigods.” These are Riordan’s comments in TV Insider’s interview, not dialogue from the episode.
