The Residence is an eight-episode Netflix mystery that mixes a White House murder investigation with an intentionally eccentric comic tone. Its central draw is detective Cordelia Cupp, played by Uzo Aduba; its main risk is that a large suspect ensemble can make the story feel overstuffed. If you enjoy offbeat whodunnits and sharp dialogue, it may be worth your time. If you want a tightly focused, straight-faced procedural, the premise may be less appealing.
What is Netflix’s The Residence about?
Netflix’s official synopsis puts the case in the White House residence during a state dinner: “A brilliant, eccentric detective must solve a murder in the White House residence — where the staff and guests at a state dinner are all suspects.” The setting makes the investigation a workplace mystery as well as a whodunnit: people who keep the residence running share the stage with the dinner’s guests.
Uzo Aduba plays Cordelia Cupp, the detective assigned to solve the case. Randall Park is among the cast as Edwin Park. The series was created and showrun by Paul William Davies, with Shonda Rhimes and Betsy Beers as executive producers.
Is The Residence worth watching?
The answer depends on how much you enjoy a mystery that treats its eccentricity as part of the entertainment. Netflix describes the series as a “screwball whodunnit” and classifies it with tags including offbeat, witty, mystery, sharp dialogue, workplace, and comedy. Those labels set expectations for a story that aims to be funny and peculiar alongside its murder investigation, rather than a solemn White House drama.

Cupp is the clearest reason to give the series a try: the show’s concept gives an unusual detective room to investigate a conspicuous, high-pressure gathering. TIME’s review likewise identifies Cordelia as the show’s most fascinating character, while describing the series as overstuffed. That tension captures the main trade-off: an expansive suspect field offers plenty of personalities and possibilities, but can compete with the detective and make the mystery feel crowded.
For documentary viewers, the White House setting may be an added point of interest, but the series is a fictional murder mystery, not a factual account of an investigation or a documentary about presidential residence staff. Its comic, heightened premise is the right lens for deciding whether to watch.
How many episodes are in The Residence?
Netflix lists The Residence as a TV-MA series with eight episodes. The listed finale is titled “The Mystery of the Yellow Room.” Netflix released the series on March 20, 2025. The eight-episode listing makes it a contained season to sample rather than an open-ended procedural commitment; Netflix’s listing identifies no further season in the cited materials.

The series is inspired by Kate Andersen Brower’s nonfiction book The Residence: Inside the Private World of the White House. Shondaland characterizes the screen adaptation as a “fantastical departure” from that source. The book offers nonfiction background on the private world of the White House; it is not the source of the series’ fictional murder plot. Readers interested in the real-life setting can approach the book as separate further reading, not as a case guide.

Who should watch it?
- Try it if you want a self-contained mystery with an eccentric lead, a distinctive setting, and a comic, offbeat sensibility.
- Consider skipping it if you prefer a spare suspect list, a strictly serious tone, or a procedural that stays tightly centered on the mechanics of the investigation.
