Rez Ball is a fictional sports drama inspired by real reservation basketball culture and by Michael Powell’s nonfiction book Canyon Dreams: A Basketball Season on the Navajo Nation. Powell followed the real Chinle High School Wildcats in Arizona; the film instead follows the fictional Chuska Warriors in Chuska, New Mexico. It is not a direct retelling of the Wildcats’ season or of one documented game.
What real story inspired Rez Ball?
The film draws on the world of Native American high school basketball described in TIME’s 2024 interview with director and co-writer Sydney Freeland and co-writer Sterlin Harjo, as well as on Powell’s book and earlier New York Times reporting. Netflix announced the project as inspired by Canyon Dreams and those articles.
Canyon Dreams is nonfiction about the Chinle High School Wildcats, a real team in Chinle, Arizona, and their pursuit of a state title in the 2016–2017 season. Rez Ball takes inspiration from the broader basketball culture and creates a different team, place, characters, and dramatic story.
What is fictional, and what is real?
| Element | What is established |
|---|---|
| Chinle Wildcats | The real Arizona high school team followed in Powell’s nonfiction book. |
| Chuska Warriors | The fictional Native American high school team at the center of the film. |
| Chuska, New Mexico | A fictional town, as the Navajo Nation government’s September 20, 2024 release confirms. |
| The film’s plot | A fictional, season-long underdog story; the available sources do not establish it as a dramatization of one real season, player, or game. |
The distinction is important: the book documents a real team and season, while the movie uses an invented story to portray a basketball world rooted in lived experience. The Navajo Nation’s release independently identifies Chuska as fictional and describes the book’s real-life subject.

Who made the film, and why does that perspective matter?
Navajo filmmaker Sydney Freeland directed and co-wrote the screenplay with Seminole/Muscogee Creek filmmaker Sterlin Harjo. Freeland grew up in Gallup, New Mexico, and graduated from Navajo Prep, according to the Navajo Nation. Netflix said the production filmed in New Mexico, including on reservations with permission and support from local sovereign tribal nations.
Freeland described the goal as telling a story “authentic to the place and people, told from the inside-out” in Netflix’s 2021 project announcement. Harjo told TIME that Freeland’s experience playing basketball on the Navajo reservation gave him important context. Their connection informs the film’s perspective, but it remains a scripted drama, not a documentary.

What does “rez ball” mean in the film?
TIME describes “rez ball” as basketball played on Native American reservations. Freeland discussed its community importance and intense rivalries; Netflix’s announcement likewise presents reservation basketball as a distinctive setting for a high school team chasing a state championship. These descriptions reflect the accounts of the filmmakers and the communities involved, not a claim that every Native community experiences the game in the same way.
The film has the Warriors call plays in Navajo. Netflix’s behind-the-scenes account says the cast and crew worked on authentic Navajo pronunciation and language. The story follows the Chuska team after it loses its star player, turning its season into an underdog drama.

How the book and film connect
Readers who want the documented real-world story behind the film can turn to Michael Powell’s Canyon Dreams: A Basketball Season on the Navajo Nation. It follows Chinle’s Wildcats, not the Chuska Warriors. The book and film are connected by their subject matter and inspiration, rather than by a shared team or a one-to-one retelling.
Netflix’s October 2024 Tudum guide reports that casting drew 5,000 submissions for 10 parts. TIME also reports that candidates demonstrated basketball skills and the actors trained during production. Those details speak to how the filmmakers assembled and prepared the cast; they do not make the fictional team real.
