Joker: Folie à Deux is a direct sequel that trades the first film’s violent rise for an intimate, self-questioning mix of prison drama, courtroom story and musical. That pivot makes it more ambitious about what the Joker means—and less propulsive as a conventional thriller. Whether it is an improvement depends on which matters more: the sequel’s challenge to the original’s mythology, or the dramatic momentum it gives up along the way.
Does Joker 2 follow the first movie?
Yes. Todd Phillips’s follow-up to the 2019 Joker picks up with Arthur Fleck institutionalized at Arkham while he awaits trial for crimes committed as the Joker. He encounters fellow inmate Lee Quinzel, played by Lady Gaga, as the story turns on the question of whether Arthur and the Joker are one identity or two.
The film was written by Phillips and Scott Silver. Joaquin Phoenix, Gaga, Brendan Gleeson, Catherine Keener and Zazie Beetz lead the cast. At the 2024 Venice Film Festival, Phillips described the project as an exploration of identity, asking, “Who is Arthur Fleck?” The festival’s official record lists a running time of 138 minutes; the Associated Press review lists 139 minutes. In practical terms, set aside about two hours and 18 minutes.
Is Joker: Folie à Deux a musical?
Yes. The songs are part of the film’s way of entering Arthur and Lee’s inner lives, not simply a string of numbers inserted into a crime story. Phillips’s Venice statement asks, “And where does the music inside him come from?” The question captures the sequel’s approach: music gives shape to fantasy, intimacy and identity while the courtroom and prison settings keep Arthur’s actions in view.

#1 Best Overall
That combination is a sharp departure from the first film’s crime-drama momentum. The sequel moves among musical sequences, confinement and legal proceedings rather than building toward another transformation into public spectacle. Its form asks viewers to consider what Arthur is imagining and what he is accountable for; it does not offer the same straightforward escalation as a conventional follow-up.
Why might Joker 2 frustrate fans?
The original’s imagery and Arthur’s violent transformation made the Joker himself the spectacle. The sequel redirects attention from that spectacle to the consequences of Arthur’s actions and to the gap between Arthur Fleck and the persona he has created. Instead of amplifying the mayhem, it confines him, puts him on trial and makes identity its central problem.
That is a deliberate expectation-subverting choice, but it is not evidence that the filmmakers set out to antagonize fans. Jake Coyle of the AP describes the result as an “anti-sequel” and says Phillips subverts expectations, while also finding the movie remarkably inert. The frustration some viewers may feel follows from the mismatch between the first film’s sensational rise and a sequel that interrogates the audience’s investment in that rise. The film’s provocation is in what it refuses to turn into entertainment, not in any established private motive on the filmmakers’ part.
Does the sequel improve on the original?
It improves on the first film in ambition and self-questioning, not necessarily in momentum or dramatic satisfaction. The decision to revisit the Joker phenomenon through a trial and an unstable intimate relationship gives the sequel a distinct reason to exist: it examines the identity that the first film helped turn into an icon. But that scrutiny also narrows the story’s forward drive.

Coyle’s AP review finds Phoenix compelling and credits Phillips with subverting expectations, yet calls the film theoretically interesting and curiously dull. A Venice review in Le Monde likewise describes the sequel as tamer than its predecessor, while noting Phoenix’s performance and the legal and intimate twists around Arthur’s identity. These are two selected contemporary readings, not a representative review aggregate, but together they clarify the trade-off: greater self-awareness does not automatically make for a more satisfying watch.
Performance and dramatic energy
Phoenix remains the film’s most compelling anchor in Coyle’s assessment. His physical characterization carries Arthur’s vulnerability and the strain of the identity question. Gaga’s Lee brings the relationship at the center of the story into focus, although the film’s overall pace can leave its dramatic turns feeling less forceful than the performances suggest. A strong lead performance and a deliberate concept do not necessarily produce a taut thriller.

Is Joker 2 worth watching?
Watch it if you are interested in a sequel that challenges the attention and expectations created by the first Joker, or if a musical layered into a prison-and-courtroom drama sounds intriguing. Go in expecting a more restrained, self-conscious film, not a repeat of the original’s violent ascent. If you want a brisk escalation of the Joker’s public chaos, the sequel’s choices may feel more frustrating than rewarding.
The film premiered in the 2024 Venice competition, with a screening recorded for September 4. Its release also produced a striking early audience signal: AP reported a North American opening-weekend estimate of $40 million and a D CinemaScore from opening-night ticket buyers on October 6, 2024. Those figures describe that specific opening weekend and its poll; they are not a measure of the film’s enduring reputation or a current box-office total.

What should viewers know before watching?
The film runs about 138 minutes according to the Venice record and the British Board of Film Classification (BBFC); AP lists 139 minutes. The classification details differ by jurisdiction: AP lists an R rating, while the BBFC classifies the UK release as crime, drama and musical and advises that it contains strong violence, language, brief sex, discrimination, sexual violence or threat, suicide or self-harm, smoking and flashing images. Consult the BBFC record for its full UK content guidance.
For music listeners, AP reported that Lady Gaga released a companion album, Harlequin, alongside the film. The album is a separate way into the movie’s musical world, though the film’s songs function within its story rather than as a conventional action soundtrack.
