Miss Moneypenny’s best lines turn flirtation with James Bond into a contest she often wins. This ten-quote selection spans the classic office banter of Lois Maxwell’s era and Eve Moneypenny’s later evolution into an MI6 ally. It is an editorial selection, not an official ranking.

Ten memorable Moneypenny quotes

The order below is a curated selection, not a canonical top ten. The classic-film lines lean into wit, flirtation and quick reversals; the later examples show Moneypenny setting her own terms. Quotes are drawn from screenplay texts and a script transcription, so punctuation or wording may vary from the final cut.

  1. “Oh, the only gold I know about is the kind you wear…” — Goldfinger (1964)

When Bond brings up gold, Moneypenny redirects the conversation to the ring on his left hand. The line turns a casual exchange into a knowing tease. Read the Goldfinger screenplay.

  2. “Well, what about tonight?” — Goldfinger (1964)

Moneypenny offers Bond a dinner invitation, making the familiar office flirtation feel like a real possibility—at least until he finds a reason to retreat. Read the Goldfinger screenplay.

  3. “That’s the flimsiest excuse you’ve ever given me.” — Goldfinger (1964)

Bond’s attempt to get out of dinner does not fool her. It is a compact example of Moneypenny refusing to let him control the exchange with charm alone. Read the Goldfinger screenplay.

  4. “Lucky man. I’ve never been to Istanbul.” — From Russia With Love (1963)

Bond mentions Istanbul, and Moneypenny turns the location into an opening for a dry, pointed exchange. The line works as both a travel remark and an invitation for him to take her along. Read the From Russia With Love screenplay.

  5. “Maybe I should get you to take me there some day. I’ve tried everything else.” — From Russia With Love (1963)

Her follow-up makes the flirtation unmistakable—and suggests she has tested plenty of ways to get Bond’s attention already. Read the From Russia With Love screenplay.

  6. “Oh, really, James?” — From Russia With Love (1963)

Bond claims he never looks at another woman. Moneypenny’s brief response is all it takes to signal that she does not believe him.

  7. “I was on a date, if you must know, with a gentleman.” — GoldenEye (1995)

Bond assumes Moneypenny has been waiting for him; she corrects him with a detail that makes clear her life does not revolve around his visits. Read the GoldenEye script transcription.

  8. “As far as I can remember, James, you’ve never had me.” — GoldenEye (1995)

When Bond’s flirtation turns suggestive, Moneypenny gives him a pointed answer that neatly reverses the power dynamic. Read the GoldenEye script transcription.

  9. “Someday you have to make good on your innuendoes.” — GoldenEye (1995)

Moneypenny meets innuendo with a challenge of her own. The line captures the verbal sparring that makes their relationship more than Bond’s one-sided routine. Read the GoldenEye script transcription.

  10. “Queen and country, James.” — Tomorrow Never Dies (1997)

This concise sign-off is identified as a Moneypenny line in the official 007 Jubilee quiz, which asks readers to name the film. See the official 007 Jubilee quiz.

How Moneypenny changes across the Bond films

The earlier selections showcase the familiar office sparring: Moneypenny recognizes Bond’s evasions, answers innuendo with innuendo and keeps the conversation on equal footing. In Skyfall, Eve Moneypenny begins as a field agent. After M’s death, she tells Bond she plans to take a desk-based role supporting the new M. The official franchise profile describes her as an ally in Spectre and No Time To Die; that active role is a shift from, not simply a continuation of, the classic office-based portrayal.
