Not as a fact established by the joke or the reporting available here. During the opening monologue of the Saturday Night Live 50th-anniversary special, John Mulaney joked that only two of the show’s hosts had “committed murder.” A February 17, 2025, entertainment report identified O.J. Simpson and Robert Blake as the likely targets—but its account does not establish that either man committed murder.
Who was John Mulaney talking about?
In a line quoted by Just Jared on February 17, 2025, Mulaney said: “Over the course of 50 years, 894 people have hosted Saturday Night Live, and it amazes me that only two of them have committed murder.” The report says the two people he was likely referring to were O.J. Simpson and Robert Blake.
That identification is the reporter’s interpretation, not confirmation from Mulaney. The quoted figure of 894 is part of the joke; the report does not independently verify it as a host count.
What does the report say about Robert Blake?
Just Jared reports that Blake was charged in connection with the 2001 killing of his wife, Bonnie Lee Bakley, and was found not guilty in March 2005. An acquittal is not a finding that a defendant committed the crime. The cited article is a secondary entertainment report, not a court record, so its account of the outcome should be attributed to that source.

What does the report establish about O.J. Simpson?
It does not give a reliable account of Simpson’s criminal case. In the same discussion, the article says he was “convicted of killing” Nicole Brown Simpson and Ron Goldman, then says he “was acquitted.” Those statements conflict. Without an authoritative legal source to resolve the contradiction, neither wording should be repeated as an established fact here. The available material also does not establish a civil-case outcome.
So, was the SNL50 murder joke true?
The joke’s wording turns two likely references into a punchline; it is not proof of guilt or a substitute for legal findings. The report says Blake was acquitted, while its contradictory description leaves Simpson’s legal history unresolved in the material available for this article. The careful answer is that the joke likely referred to Simpson and Blake, but the cited report does not substantiate the claim that both hosts committed murder.
