The choice is not forgiveness or trust: Matt remains opposed to Fisk, but his commitment to protect life holds even when his anger is personal.
What happens in “Isle of Joy”?
At Mayor Fisk’s Black and White Ball, Benjamin “Dex” Poindexter—Bullseye—targets Fisk. Matt throws himself in front of Fisk and takes the bullet. The episode ends with Matt wounded on the ballroom floor, leaving his condition unresolved.
“Isle of Joy” is episode 8 of the 2025 first season, not its finale. Marvel frames Matt as a lawyer fighting for justice and Fisk as a former mob boss pursuing political power (Marvel’s series page; Marvel’s show overview). Contemporary episode coverage describes the attack and Matt’s intervention (TV Insider’s episode recap; Den of Geek’s episode coverage).
Why does Matt save Fisk?
Dex’s challenge puts Matt’s principle into words: “In another life you might be defending me, because thats what good men do, right? Defend their worst enemies.” The line, as reported in a recap, raises the question Matt answers with his action: will he protect a life even when the person in danger is his enemy? (TV Insider)

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Matt’s intervention is best read as a refusal to let Bullseye carry out an immediate killing—not as a decision to pardon Fisk. One episode explanation also connects Matt’s choice to Fisk not being responsible for Foggy Nelson’s death; that is an interpretation of the scene, not a confirmed creator explanation (Den of Geek).
- Principle over vengeance: Matt’s grief and anger do not override his refusal to let someone be killed before him.
- Intervention, not reconciliation: Saving Fisk does not mean Matt trusts him, approves of his political aims, or forgives his past actions.
What does the ending mean?
The shot turns Matt’s moral choice into an immediate physical cost: he protects Fisk and is left gravely wounded. Dex’s challenge is no longer just a provocation; Matt’s action supplies the answer. But the episode closes on a cliffhanger, so “Isle of Joy” does not establish whether Matt survives or how he recovers. Treating his fate as settled goes beyond this episode.
