Timothée Chalamet plays Private Phillipe de Jardin, a French immigrant and soldier, in Hostiles (2017), Scott Cooper’s Western drama. De Jardin joins a perilous Army escort mission across the American West.
What is Hostiles about?
Set in 1892, the film follows Captain Joseph Blocker, played by Christian Bale, as he escorts a dying Cheyenne chief, Yellow Hawk, and his family from an isolated New Mexico outpost toward their homeland in Montana. The journey brings them into contact with a young widow whose family was killed on the plains, as well as dangers posed by the landscape and other threats. AFI FEST’s 2017 program describes a story that challenges easy distinctions between aggressor and victim: AFI FEST: Hostiles.
