Dune: Part Three is in post-production, and director Denis Villeneuve says he has finished editing while visual-effects work continues. The update was reported at the film’s March 2026 trailer event; the available statement is Villeneuve’s, not a direct confirmation from Timothée Chalamet.
What progress has been confirmed on Dune: Part Three?
At the March 18, 2026 trailer event, Villeneuve said the film was “full-speed” in post-production and that he had finished the edit. He added that visual effects still needed time, joking, “It’s going well; the movie is alive.” Variety’s event report attributes these remarks to Villeneuve. They should not be presented as a statement by Chalamet.

That distinction matters: the assigned headline’s wording suggests Chalamet confirmed the production update, but the cited progress remarks came from the director. The update establishes that editing was complete at the time of the event, while visual-effects work remained underway; it does not give a completion date for post-production.
When will the film be released?
The official film website lists a North American theatrical and IMAX release for December 18, 2026. Its international rollout begins December 16, 2026, so the film’s release date depends on territory. Warner Bros. Pictures is named as worldwide distributor, with Legendary East listed for China.

What is the story, and which book is it based on?
The official synopsis places the story nearly two decades after Paul Atreides seized control of the Imperium. Paul faces the consequences of his reign as old allies return and new threats emerge; Chani is at the heart of a conspiracy. Villeneuve and Brian K. Vaughan wrote the screenplay based on Frank Herbert’s novels. Abu Dhabi’s Creative Media Authority identifies Dune Messiah as the source novel.
At the March 2026 trailer event, Villeneuve said the story takes place 17 years after Dune: Part Two and described the new film as having a different tone, rhythm, and pace, with more action and tension. At Warner Bros.’ April 2026 CinemaCon presentation, he characterized it as a thriller more intense and emotional than the earlier films, according to the Associated Press. Those are the director’s descriptions, not independent critical assessments.

The authority’s reported participation figures describe the local shoot, not the film’s entire global crew:
- More than 600 UAE-based individuals were involved.
- 206 were local crew members.
- 336 came from the wider local creative industry, including caterers.
- 38 people took part in crowd scenes, and six interns supported off-camera production roles.
Sameer Al Jaberi, Head of the Abu Dhabi Film Commission, said the 31-day shoot involved people across those roles. Herb Gains, EVP of Physical Production at Legendary Entertainment, praised the local crew, resources, and care shown to cast and crew. The figures and comments are from the authority’s July 9, 2026 report; they are local production details, not independent measures of economic impact.
