Burton also sounded unsure that he would make another film in the series.
Why did Burton say he might have been replaced?
In April 2025, Warner Bros. co-CEO Mike De Luca reportedly told Deadline that development on a third Beetlejuice film was starting “imminently.” The report also said De Luca acknowledged that deals might not yet be finished. The comment described an anticipated development step, not a confirmed start of filming.

When asked about De Luca’s remark in a July 2025 interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Burton responded, as quoted by Forbes: “Really? Nobody told me Maybe I’ve been replaced.” The line was a dry, joking reaction to hearing that the studio had discussed moving ahead without apparently telling him. It does not establish that the studio had chosen another director or that Burton was actually removed from the project.
The Forbes account reproduces the quote without a visible full stop after “me.” The wording is therefore best understood as reported rather than treated as a punctuation-verified transcript of the original interview.

Does Burton want to make Beetlejuice 3?
Burton expressed affection for the characters and enjoyment of making Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, but he did not commit to a third film. In the Forbes account of the interview, he said: “I love the characters, but I don’t necessarily see it.”
He also joked about the long interval between the first two films: “It took 35 years to make the second one, so by that time I’ll be 105. I know those odds are not good.” The 35 years and age of 105 were part of Burton’s own comment about the prospect of another sequel, not a production schedule or independently established forecast.

Burton said he feels “very proprietary” about his projects despite not owning the characters, and Forbes reported that he “got pissed” when the Beetlejuice Broadway musical was made. His remarks suggest a strong personal connection to the material, but they do not amount to a decision about whether he would direct a third film.

Ortega, who was speaking with Burton while they promoted season two of Wednesday, also joked, “Maybe I’ve been, too.” Asked whether she would appear in another Beetlejuice film without Burton directing, she said, “Oh, I would never.” She added that the project’s identity was tied to Burton and called proceeding without him potentially disrespectful, according to Forbes’s account of the interview.

Is Beetlejuice 3 in production, and when could it come out?
A Creepy Catalog report updated October 4, 2026 said that, as of October 2, no director, cast, writer, official title, plot, filming schedule, or release date had been announced. That is the latest sourced status available here; it does not establish whether anything changed between October 2 and October 8, 2026.
Neither De Luca’s reported “imminently” comment nor Burton’s joke confirms that production began. The available reporting supports a narrower conclusion: a studio executive had described development as imminent in 2025, while Burton said he had not been told and expressed uncertainty about making another film. No release date can be inferred from those remarks.
