That overlap makes the New Avengers’ relevance to the next Avengers film a strong expectation. It does not reveal their roles, screen time or the plot’s specific turns.
What is the Thunderbolts* plot twist?
The twist is less a disclosed plot point than a change in how the team’s future looks. Disney’s Thunderbolts* film page and marketing use the name “The New Avengers” for the group. Then the March 26, 2025 Doomsday cast announcement included six actors from that ensemble. Together, the new team name and the cast overlap make the group’s connection to Doomsday hard to dismiss as a one-film joke.
That is the sound conclusion—not that the cast list has exposed a secret storyline. An actor’s inclusion confirms a place on the announced cast list, not the character’s role in the story, how much they appear or what happens to them.
Which Thunderbolts* actors are in the Doomsday cast?
| Actor | Named in the March 2025 cast announcement |
|---|---|
| Florence Pugh | Yes |
| Sebastian Stan | Yes |
| Wyatt Russell | Yes |
| Lewis Pullman | Yes |
| David Harbour | Yes |
| Hannah John-Kamen | Yes |
The announcement also named returning Avengers, Fantastic Four performers and actors from the former X-Men films. The cast list establishes a broad ensemble; it does not say how those groups meet or what each will do. The names above identify actors, not a confirmed character-by-character roster for Doomsday.

How Thunderbolts* sets up the New Avengers
Disney describes Thunderbolts* as bringing together Yelena Belova, Bucky Barnes, Red Guardian, Ghost, Taskmaster and John Walker after Valentina Allegra de Fontaine’s death trap. The New Avengers label gives that group a direct thematic bridge to an Avengers film. The six-actor overlap strengthens the inference that the team matters beyond its own movie.
The label and casting do not establish whether every member acts together, how they relate to the Fantastic Four or other announced groups, or how they confront Doctor Doom. Disney UK’s later announcement describes heroes from three universes on a collision course against an existential threat, but offers no character-by-character plot details.

- After being ensnared in a death trap, an unconventional team of antiheroes assembles and embarks on a dangerous mission. Forced to confront the darkest corners of their pasts, will the group tear themselves apart, or find redemption and prevail?
What is confirmed about Doctor Doom and Doomsday?
On July 27, 2024, Disney announced Robert Downey Jr. would return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe in a new role as Doctor Doom, and named Anthony and Joe Russo as directors of Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars. At the reveal, Downey said, “New mask, same task.” The announcement establishes Doom and the directors; it does not explain Doom’s conflict with the New Avengers.
What changed in the later cast and release update?
Disney UK’s July 20, 2026 trailer and poster announcement provided a later, expanded cast list, including Chris Evans, Kathryn Newton and Mabel Cadena. It states that Avengers: Doomsday will release exclusively in UK cinemas on December 16, 2026. That later update adds current context; the March 2025 announcement remains the relevant cast reveal for the six-actor overlap discussed here.

Why the Thunderbolts* character story matters
The ensemble’s appeal is not only its connection to the Avengers name. In a D23 interview, Thunderbolts* director Jake Schreier described the story’s focus on whether people retreat inward or find connection and move forward together: “Where do you go? Do you retreat into yourself, or do you find connection in others and move forward through that?” He also said the less familiar group gave the filmmakers room to explore different directions: “There is room to take [the story] in different places and do some different things with it.”
That emphasis makes the team’s future relevance an interesting character question as well as a casting one. The announcements, however, do not say how those individual arcs continue in Doomsday.

Thunderbolts* at a glance
Disney’s official film page lists Thunderbolts* as PG-13, with a runtime of 2 hours 6 minutes and a release date of May 2, 2025. The page also confirms a Blu-ray release. These details identify the film and its official listing; they do not add evidence about Doomsday’s plot.
