The Rookie is packed with recognizable guest actors, but a famous face in a fictional role is not automatically a celebrity cameo. Here, a cameo means a brief appearance by a public figure as themself—or in a self-referential moment. Judged by recognition, surprise, comic payoff and how naturally each appearance fits its episode, these five self-appearances stand out. The order is an editorial ranking, not a measured fan consensus.
What counts as a celebrity cameo on The Rookie?
ABC describes the series as following John Nolan, an older rookie in the LAPD, and identifies Alexi Hawley as its creator and an executive producer. The show’s official series page provides episode and viewing information. For this list, the defining feature is not simply fame: each pick appears as themself or in a self-referential role, rather than playing a conventional fictional guest character.
That distinction matters because ABC Press uses “guest starring” for actors portraying story characters, as in its press materials. Those performances can be memorable, but they belong in a guest-star ranking, not a cameo list. The names below are drawn from a fan-maintained guest index; the ranking itself reflects editorial judgment, not an official or surveyed order.
The five best celebrity cameos, ranked
1. Kelly Clarkson
Clarkson takes the top spot because her broad recognition makes a quick self-appearance immediately legible, while the self-aware premise gives the moment its point: the scene works because the audience knows who she is. Of the five, hers is the most straightforward blend of surprise and comic payoff. The fan index lists her among the people who appear as themselves; consult the episode for the precise scene and context.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
2. Mark Cuban
Cuban’s business-celebrity profile makes him an unexpected presence in a police drama, a contrast that gives the appearance an easy jolt of recognition. He ranks just below Clarkson because the cameo’s appeal rests more on the surprise of seeing him there than on a uniquely documented story payoff. The fan index identifies him as a self-appearance.
3. will.i.am
As a globally recognizable musician, will.i.am brings a different kind of star power to the show’s self-appearance roster. The cameo earns its place through the gap between his music-world identity and the series’ LAPD setting. It ranks third: a strong recognition moment, though the available episode listing alone does not establish enough scene detail to claim a larger narrative role.

4. Ryan Seacrest
Seacrest’s familiarity as a television and radio host makes him a natural fit for a brief, self-referential appearance. The recognition arrives quickly, and the cameo does not need a long explanation to register. He lands fourth because the core appeal is the familiar face itself; the listing confirms the self-appearance but does not support a more specific account of its joke or episode function.
5. Jake and Jack Tapper
The Tappers make the list as a pair: journalist Jake Tapper and his son Jack Tapper are both listed as appearing as themselves. Their presence is an especially distinctive real-world crossover, and it gives the ranking a less conventional kind of celebrity cameo. They place fifth because the available source establishes the appearances and episode leads, but does not provide verified scene detail to support a stronger claim about the moment’s humor or story fit.

How to find the appearances
The fan index is a useful starting point for locating the performers and associated episode titles, but it is not an official ABC cast database. Check the episode or its official credits when you want to confirm a scene or identify exactly how someone appears. ABC’s show page points viewers to full episodes on ABC and Hulu; availability can vary by time and region.
